fantastic graphic novel
Named after Valentine’s Day, Valentina Tran loves the holiday until she finds out the truth of what happened between her parents. The spirit of Saint Valentine tells her she is cursed in love. She is ready to believe this until she receives a paper heart from a mysterious lion dancer one Lunar New Year festival, prompting her desire to change her destiny. Finding peace in lion dancing since his father’s death, Jae notices Val at the Lunar New Year festival and hands her a paper heart but his cousin Leslie also sees her and they end up dating. Jae feels a connection with Val. Both struggle with spirits haunting them. LUNAR NEW YEAR LOVE STORY was a fantastic graphic novel filled with gorgeous illustrations and an emotional love story on multiple levels. The characters were compelling. I loved the exploration of family and culture. Both poignant and heartwarming, LUNAR NEW YEAR LOVE STORY was an excellent read that I’d highly recommend to fans of graphic novels.

Beautifully illustrated, complex and emotional
Lunar New Year Love Story is a complex, emotional YA graphic novel about finding love and coming to terms with the history of your family. High school senior Valentina used to love Valentine's Day until a Valentine's Day in high school when she receives a heartbreaking revelation about her mother. Val believes she is cursed since no one in her family has been lucky in love. One day her grandmother takes her to the Lunar New Year festival and Val meets two cute lion dancers. Val embarks on a journey where she learns about love, friendship, family, loss, vulnerability and trust. The novel explores Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese cultures and some of the challenges faced by immigrants. There are older characters who added wisdom and depth to the story. The paranormal elements brought spookiness and suspense. The beautiful, vibrant artwork really brought the characters to life. I really enjoyed the lion dancing.

such a great book
This book really has it all. It taught me about different cultures, it entertained me with its clever plot, it intrigued me with the paranormal elements, and of course...romance (but it doesn't hit you over the head with it--there's just enough)! You know what this book would be fantastic for--to give to a friend (or anyone) as a Valentine's present!! Who needs more roses and chocolate? This book expresses everything you could possibly want to say. The character development is awesome, and it explores the relationships between friends and families in a really interesting way, with elements of grief and loss. There's also a really interesting exploration of fate and free will. Honestly, I can't say enough about this book--the illustrations are beautiful and nuanced, as well. And the ending...I won't give anything away, but it was most satisfying.

Love is a Dance
I love graphic novels, but my favorites fall in line with great characters and great illustrations, just like this story! Lunar New Year Love Story is a graphic novel that fits right in with my favorites. I have enjoyed books with LeUyen Pham's illustrations before and really like the detail and nuances her characters hold. This graphic novel's illustrations set the tone perfectly and really allows the characters that Gene Luen Yang has written shine through. Together they make a graphic novel that you will want to read in one sitting. Our story takes place with Valentina having an imaginary friend, "Saint V", who shows up with a mysterious Valentine's Day card every year. As she grows up, she is dealt a lot of hard truths about her family and her imaginary friend changes with each one as her ideas about love changes too. With each betrayal, her imaginary friend becomes more sinister. She finds joy in dance and struggles with love and family. I really liked Valentina and found her very relatable with her struggles with love and betrayal. The depiction of Saint Valentine was perfectly used in each rendition. It made the story darker than I was expecting but it still worked. I enjoyed Valentina's love of dance and I like that I got to learn about Asian culture with Lunar New Year and Lion Dancing.

Beautiful and heartwarming
I adored this graphic novel! Literally could not put it down start to finish and finished with tears in my eyes. It’s so heartwarming and truly a joy to read. The story follows Val who thinks her family might be cursed – doomed to never have happiness in love, always only suffering. She meets some lion dancers and starts learning the art and also starts hoping that this could be her chance to break the cycle and be lucky in love. There’s a really sweet and relatable romance in the book that was so well written! Val goes on first dates, gets to know boys, and navigates entering this part of adulthood. She also delves deeper into lion dancing, which was such a cool part of the book! I loved seeing the drawings of the characters practicing and I loved learning about lion dancing. The art style was so alive – the lions had so much movement during the dances, and so much expression was captured in the character’s faces throughout the story. There are some darker, slightly somber moments, and they always felt perfectly balanced. The ending of this book was wonderful – the story is leading towards something and when it hits, it’s powerful and touching. I was so happy and satisfied and closed the novel knowing I had read something special. First five star read of the year!
