About the Author
Douglas W. Smith served for nearly three decades as a wildlife biologist at Yellowstone National Park, spearheading an initiative to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone and leading the park's bird and elk programs. He retired in 2022. Lauren E. Walker is a biologist at the US Geological Survey's Bird Banding Laboratory and was formerly a wildlife biologist for several years with the Yellowstone bird program.
