Q: is this a paper canister?

submitted by tina - 3 years ago
  • A: Thanks for asking, Tina. Our Quaker Old Fashioned Oats are packaged in a cardboard tube. We hope this information helps.

submitted byQuaker Customer Support - 3 years ago

  • A: Not entirely. There is a plastic rim at the top that must be cut out if you want to recycle the cardboard.

Q: This says "Does not contain any of the 8 major allergens". Does this mean they can be called "gluten free"? Just checking before I make GF desserts for friends.

submitted by jfeerst - 5 years ago
  • A: I'm not sure. I would either try Googling your question and/or check the Quaker website, there may be a phone number to call and ask them. Hope this helps.

submitted byRL - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi, Jfeerst. Quaker Old Fashioned Oats are not considered gluten free. We do offer gluten free oatmeal in 3 varieties: 18 oz. Quaker Quick 1-Minute Oats, and Quaker Instant Oatmeal in 10 count Original and 8 count Maple & Brown Sugar. Quaker gluten-free varieties are clearly labeled on packages and available in stores under the Quaker Select Starts line.

Q: Are these oats processed in a faciliity that uses equipment to process anything with tree nuts?

submitted by Mary - 3 years ago
  • A: Thanks for asking, Mary. If any of the top eight allergens (Milk, Egg, Fish, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish, Soy, Wheat) are an ingredient or a component of the ingredient, the allergen will be listed in the Ingredients list or included in a "Contains" statement immediately after the Ingredients list. This is consistent with FDA labeling requirements. For products made on production lines where we produce other varieties that have different allergens not contained in the product, the line is thoroughly cleaned between productions. Due to the complexity of some of the equipment in some instances it may be difficult to clean some areas completely. Because we realize the seriousness of food allergens, in those instances, we warn consumers about the possibility of trace amounts of specific allergens on shared production lines when applicable, with a "may contain" advisory statement on the label. We recommend consumers look for these statements each time they purchase a product as formulas may change.

Q: Looking for rolled oats, is this brand rolled oats ?

submitted by Lee - 3 years ago
  • A: Thanks for asking, Lee. The oats are cleaned and steamed to eliminate the undesirable enzymes present in raw oats, then 'toasted' to give them a roasted, nutty flavor. Some oats are cut into pieces to reduce cooking time and produce a more smooth and creamy texture when cooked. Oats are steamed just long enough to make them soft. Then they are passed between rollers. We hope this information helps.

Q: can you cook in microwave

submitted by Audrey - 6 years ago
  • A: Hi, Audrey. Old Fashioned Quaker Oats can be prepared in a microwave as follows: Combine water, oats and salt in medium microwaveable bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 2-1/2 to 3 minutes. Stir before serving.

Eating Quaker Oatmeal for 60+ years

5 out of 5 stars

I did have one container of Quaker Oatmeal that was very lite and the rest of the oats were powdery and small. I by the 5 minute oatmeal and I never ever cook it in the microwave! In fact I turn of burner at 4 minutes, put the top on and let it sit another 5 minutes. I also put more oatmeal than it calls for because I like mine chewy and not mushy! I also add raisins just as the water starts boiling! Please send me the original oatmeal cookie recipe and not this vanishing one. Thanks P.S. I liked the new design of the box! Old fashion!

Something changed

The most recent package does not cook up the way previous ones did. After 6 minutes on the stove top on medium, the oats are still a little hard and have not fully absorbed the liquid. I see many other reviewers are having this issue as well. I hope this is a temporary issue and not a permanent change.

Excellent Breakfast Food

Quaker Oats Old Fashioned oat meal is my go to breakfast dish. I cook the oatmeal with blueberries and strawberries (fresh or frozen) and then top with chopped walnuts and honey once in the bowl. I like to eat about a cup (dry) of oatmeal as I find it very filling. Giving I'm on a heart healthy diet, I appreciate the value of having Quaker Oats Old Fashioned oatmeal available for breakfast.

I certainly wouldn't have given a star for this product. I agree, something has changed. These oats don't cook thoroughly. I'm dumping them. Too many companies are going for new and improved. A big hit and miss with these. I always looked forward to this oatmeal. No more.

My kids love oatmeal for Breakfast. I love that it's a healthy choice over sugary cereal. I can add it to cookies and breads for extra texture and fiber. I would recommend this oatmeal.

I just bought a new package of Quaker Oats Old Fashioned oatmeal and it doesn't cook like it use to?? I've been eating this for years and just recently had this problem. I almost had someone out to look at my microwave but thankfully saw the same issues with others.

Cardboard lid inside the plastic lid open, bugs

Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
Slimmy had to toss - 1 month ago
My husband thought nothing of the cardboard lid being a little open since the plastic lid was secure but when he dumped it in to the clean, clear canister there were little, thin, black bugs all over in the oats. Make sure to pop the plastic lid off before buying. We got ours delivered.

I've been make making these on the stovetop for years. I never thought twice about it. But this last box is terrible. I've tried cooking longer, tried letting them soak, but to no avail. They still seem undercooked, chewy, and the flavor is not the same. My grandson used to love "umpa's" oatmeal, now he prefers Malt-o-meal. What a waste of money.

Not very good anymore!

I used to make Quaker Oatmeal for my family all Winter long. I live in Minnesota, and we get very cold Winters here We all loved the creaminess and the flavor of the old fashion oats when cooked in the microwave. Well, not anymore! Following the instruction for cooking the oats they are soupy and are under cooked. I tried microwaving them doubling the time and they were better but still not right. I'm sorry Quaker Oatmeal but I am tossing you in the garbage and going to another brand. You should have stuck the great way you used to make your product.

It's great for making oatmeal rasin cookies. There's a recipe on the lid for them. It also tastes great as oatmeal. You can add whatever you want to it.

I have been eating these oats for years, and until the last purchase (big box at a nationwide club", they cooked very consistently to a nice texture. All of a sudden, no mater how long you cook these, they are much more firm and chewy. They also seem a bit darker, but could be non-thing. Several other reviews are the same, something changed! I also cook these in the microwave mostly, but stove top yields the same chewy bowl of oats.

These oats are great to use in various recipes. Also, adding some ingredients you can just have oatmeal. There is plenty of oatmeal in the container for not a large amount of money.

I love these oats. First of all, they are healthy. Secondly, they can be used for several things. I make my own oatmeal, granola, and even grind it to a powder to add to my smoothies. I always have a can in the cupboard.
