Whirl feels better at first spin
The previous handheld spreader (not a Scotts} lasted one application before seizing up. The Scott's Whirl turns better, spins much smoother and makes quick work out of spreading fertilizer and pest prevention consistently over my 5000 sq. Ft. of yards.

My Go-To Spreader - 2 Changes to Perfection
This is a great spreader for small lawns - it would be perfect with two changes. I have a 2300 ft2 lawn, and the Whirl is great for lawns like mine. I recommend making two changes to improve it: 1. Put a pour lip on it. People with small lawns are probably the primary users of the Whirl. Small lawns means that an entire bag of product won’t be used all at once. Much easier to get the remaining product back in the bag with a pour lip built into the top. 2. Put spreader settings for all spreaders on each bag of product. Push spreaders are covered, but finding a Whirl setting is hit or miss. Wizz settings are not the same. I want to get my product applications as close to perfect as possible - that’s a tall order without recommended settings for your spreader on the bag. Bottom line - this is a great product for urban lawn addicts like me. A couple of tweaks would make it perfect.

Spits product out fine but bags of insecticide, fertilizer etc. don't show a setting to use for my Handy Green.

Need Pace Instructions for REAL application rate.
Works as advertised, but there is no information on what speed to walk or what speed to crank. If I walk slow and crank fast, I am putting down a lot of product. If I walk fast and crank slow, I am putting down a little product. That can be a 10x difference in application rate. So how do you know if you are putting down too much or too little? Please provide walking feet/minute and cranking rotations/minute, or at least a video of what pace to walk and pace to crank. Otherwise, it is a complete crapshoot on how much is actually getting applied.
1 reply from Customer Care team - 2 years ago
When using Scotts Whirl Hand-Powered Spreader you will need to walk at a normal pace (20 feet in 5 seconds), turning the crank fast enough to get an even distribution of material. Take care not to spread product onto unwanted areas, such as landscaping, vegetable garden, sidewalk, driveway, etc. For spreader settings check the label of the product being applied. We do not recommend applying granule pesticides with a hand-held spreader unless the spreader setting is listed on the bag. This is a health concern because of increased exposure to product compared to when applying with a push spreader). Please visit our video guide on using this spreader: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f92F63O8lro). For any additional information and assistance. Please reach out to our Consumer Services team at 888-270-3714.

Decline in Quality
We have been using the hand crank Whirl for years and usually get an entire season out of it. However, this year we barely got a month out of the Whirl and the handle keeps coming off.

Contradiction re: herbicide usage
The spreader works well. However, your site says for weed, feed, etc. Then later on your site, there is a caution not to use it for herbicides. Contradiction!

I’ve bought several of these spreaders over the years. The construction has changed little but the one thing that I would like to see is an ambidextrous model, or a left handed model. The under arm stop was a good idea for hand fatigue but being able to switch hands would be a plus. Maybe it’s not profitable but I’d be willing to pay more to obtain something with a crank on both sides. G.

Nifty little spreader
Used the product today, worked well, but had to guess on what the setting would be for over-seeding my lawn. The Vigoro Bermuda Grass Seed I purchased did not indicate what the setting should be using a Scott’s Whirl hand held, rotary or any other spreader. Would be nice if your product listed the correct setting for over-seeding a lawn.

No chart on application rates
There is no instructions or charts to know how much product you’re spreading. It’s a guess! I’m putting down The Anderson’s .48% Barricade. Which setting do I use ? 1,2,3?
1 reply from Customer Care team - 2 years ago
Thanks for your inquiry. Settings will be listed on the product label not on the spreader. Do not use a hand-held spreader to apply a product containing a pesticide (herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, etc) UNLESS a hand-held spreader setting is provided on the label.

MISSING INSTRUCTIONS ON APPLICATION SETTINGS!!!
Looking for what the settings to use for application. Why dont you have them up here rather than the lame "set orange dial to the correct setting.... Your instructions here do not do justice to being useful by explaining Setting 1 = X lbs/unit, setting 2=X lbs/unit. Common sense in my opinion. Why would Scott not have the simple scale definition up here at the website?

I bought this a few days ago. Definitely makes spreading seeds and fertilizer easier however, many of the fertilizer pellets fall onto the ground while using and the width that the fertilizer shoots out is too wide for the area of my lawn that’s narrow. It would be great if there was a way to adjust this setting without having to purchase a separate attachment.

Love My New Spreader!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Scotts® Whirl™ Hand-Powered Spreader features an adjustable forearm support. This support spreads the weight out which eases the pressure on your wrist. Using the Scotts® Whirl™ is so comfortable! It is a nice upgrade from my old Scotts spreader that I've used for years.

Easy and effective
Perfectly easy to use and does a great job on a small yard. The spreader itself is light weight and the pull out arm rest really makes it easy to hold up with one hand for an extended period of time.
