Assembly nightmare

The labeling of the screws and the manual completely don’t match. Definitely need at least two people to put this thing together, once it’s up the product is good quality. But do better with the assembly instruction, I have read the same one star reviews dated back to 2022 and the same issues still persist.

At first glance it looks like a nice hoop that’s moveable. Be ready for it to fall over though as the base is trash. The fill hole for the base is insanely small making it difficult to put sand in. I gave up with the sand after awhile and filled it the rest of the way with water. This would work fine if the base didn’t leak after a few months leaving next to no weight in the base. One day you have a nice sturdy hoop and then one windy day you’ll have a toppled hoop with a shattered glass backboard and dented truck. Bottom line, stay away from this overpriced junk it’s not worth even half the price

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Shipping was efficient. Instructions were fairly good, but I watched a few videos prior to construction. I was able to put this together by myself with the exception of putting the backboard on. You will probably need two people for that process.
How much sand?

I Bought this hoop for my son's 6th grade graduation present. He loves playing basketball and is pretty good so I thought this would be a good idea. But anyway, I had to pick the two base poles up and smash them together for almost 30 minutes!!! I am glad that I kept up my fitness training. Then I had to attach the poles to the base, relatively easy but the tools that I need are scarce. I mean, you need a HUGE wrench extender and it just is not that popular. Because we needed to go to the store to get the tools, we figured we could also get the sand too. But the instructions don't tell you how much sand you need! Like, what?!!! But we decided to go with around 480 lbs. Then we put the rest together. Once the hoop was together, best thing ever! I love and my kid was so happy to have a really good hoop to play on and practice for the school team. In conclusion, installation is terrible but the after product is great. Also, how much sand?????????

Overall, so far this is very solid. Movement from the basketball is not even noticeable. but I want to share some notes from my experiences assembling. 1. When assembling the 2 pole pieces. If your struggling to get the pieces together, drop it from higher up. I am talking 3-4 feet at least. I ended up using a small 3 step ladder and after you get it the poles started, lifting the whole assembly and rest it on the top of the 3 step ladder, then lifting and dropping from there. You can hear it when it makes proper contact, and don't use a soft wood to land on or the pole edges will dig into the wood and dent in the top of the pole. I ended up screwing together a bunch of 2x4 pieces with the 4" side standing up. 2. Being in the Midwest, I ended up using sand. The risk of a crack and leak and it falling and breaking or hitting a car is not worth the extra effort of using the sand. If you buy standard play sand, it will very likely be damp inside the bag and does not flow through a funnel. Even if you dry it, it may not flow well. When filling the base while the hoop is laying on its side, I found it easy to just use a piece of cardboard as like a conveyor belt and I pushed the sand into the hole with my hand. This was much faster with my daughter scooping sand on the cardboard and me pushing it in, wear some small gloves. Once the hoop is stood up, filling is more tedious, I used a milk jug cut in half and the top cut off, shaking it and the sand went in, still need to push the sand out of the way using a paint stick or 1x1. On the Grey top base piece, I did cut a flap on top the width of my scooper, and found that easier to scoop sand in and then push it with a small 1x1 board to fill in the areas, then seal the flap with some waterproof gorilla tape after. 3. It does not turn well, so you do need quite a bit of space to maneuver it. This is obvious but its heavy, and tall, and wont fit in a regular garage while standing up. You would need to drain the base and tilt. While tilted low enough to get in and out of the garage, it is not resting on the wheels so it has to be dragged.
The BEAST - Easy setup, solid portable goal

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a solid and well built portable goal. Minimal shake and solid bounce off of rim and backboard. I was concerned with the many complaints on assembling the main pole sections so I put a bit of lithium spray on grease on the two sections and pounded it together in about five or six drops. My biggest issue was getting the ball deflector on - some longer bolts would have helped. Otherwise directions are clear and concise so no real issues assembling. Enjoying the BEAST!!

I bought three of these in 2011. Two for indoor use at my children's school and one for my cul-de-sac. Yes assembly takes 4 to 5 hours as the instructions aren't completely clear, but it is fairly easy and all the parts fit together well. I originally filled it with water but it was hit by a couple of careless drivers and I had to fill it with sand as the water leaked out. The goal served us well for 13 years in the Arizona heat until my sons friend decided to do a burn out in the cul-de-sac and whipped the rear of his car into the goal bending the frame. I bought a new one and assembled it yesterday and I'll light this one and put reflectors on it. I believe it will easily last 20+ years. Well made, sturdy, and has a professional feel to it even as a portable unit.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] OMG, it is exactly what its named, A BEAST! A BEAST of FUN! A BEAST of COMPETITION! A BEAST OF HAPPINESS! My boys could not be any happier. This is the real deal when it comes to quality basketball hoops. Also, couldn't be happier with the professional installer that came to our home, Osbel Lafitta. He came on time, was so professional, he wanted to make sure it was installed perfectly and placed exactly where I wanted it. He also made sure he cleaned up the GIANT boxes and crate before he left without me asking. One recommendation Spalding, to install this BEAST of Hoops its a TWO man job. Please be considerate of the installer and know its meant to be installed by 2 men not 1.

I never write reviews. I am not a novice at building basketball hoops. I felt compelled to do so with this product to warn other consumers as a public service. I do my homework diligently before buying anything, and I believe firmly that Spalding has not been transparent nor accurate with what it actually takes to build this product. If they were, no one would ever buy "The Beast". The instructions state it takes 2 capable adults. It simply does not. This build requires at a minimum 3 highly physically fit adults. I had to hire 2-3 others to ultimately help me lift the backboard onto the arms thereby significantly increasing the cost of this build. The instructions are also quite inaccurate. They leave out important pieces of information like the type of tools required to build this, e.g. long sockets for socket wrench -again increasing the cost of this build. Further, the quality of this product is very poor. Poor materials, e.g. screw heads that actually break under not so high force, poor construction and design - holes in the base that collect water and debris, parts not fitting accurately together and aligning, and worst of all very cheaply made, brittle plastic wheels to carry the load of hundreds of pounds of weight (likely north of 800 pounds taken altogether) - which strongly challenges the idea that this hoop is actually portable. While we're blessed to be able to afford such a ridiculously priced item, the price to quality of this product just makes it a terrible value proposition especially when you consider the significant added costs and importantly days of time required to put it together. Please take my advice seriously and look for other better and more practical hoops on the market like from Goalrilla.

I'm pretty sure we're at 15 yrs+ since my son is now 26. The neighborhood kids have used it more than my family ever has. It's been a great "beast" through plenty of weather, the corkscrew even works. The until part is a local non-profit making a delivery to our house, caught the beast with the top rear of the truck box and pulled the beast down. Tempered glass ka-bloo-ey. Neighbors helped clean up but all the households on our street with kids are so depressed. If I could afford beast II I'd do it. 😪

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Buyer beware. Didn’t eve get past the supportive pole that connects to the base and to the backboard. The two pieces don’t even line up. Now begins the warranty process to see if they will fix this issue. I don’t think I would be buying from Spalding again.
