Q: So is the bed cover removable for washing or does the whole bed need to be placed in the washer? Seems unclear based on the photo and reviews.

The tag says wash on cold delicate cycle, I washed on warm/cold delicate - and dry low heat. I have top loader washing machine, nothing fancy and was able to fit and wash fine.

Not a removable washable cover.
No doubt this is a great bed if you are NOT looking for a washable removable cover. The zipper opening is less than a foot and you are expected to remove all of the loose fill (not an insert cushion), wash the cover and then restuff it, I felt very mislead by the description and think this bed should change their item description. Thankful target is great about returns, that process was very easy.
