About the Book
"[A]n epic novel of love and heroism and hope, set against the backdrop of one of America's most defining eras--the Great Depression. Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli--like so many of her neighbors--must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. Through one woman's survival during the harsh and haunting Dust Bowl, master storyteller, Kristin Hannah, reminds us that the human heart and our Earth are as tough, yet as fragile, as a change in the wind. --Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing From the number-one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes a powerful American epic about love and heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression, a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, when millions were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them. "My land tells its story if you listen. The story of our family." Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman's only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa's tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive. In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa--like so many of her neighbors--must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family. The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it--the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

Be brave. Another easy 5 star book from KH. This one was a little more of a slow burn, but in true KH fashion it never lacked the usual emotional wringer she likes to put the reader through! Nobody writes historical fiction like she does. She has the true talent at taking a historical story & making it play out in front of my eyes, I felt like I could actually taste the grit from the dust storm! The sad part is connecting some of the similarities from the Great Depression, to today's world. Dehumanizing migrants & the homeless, the rich still getting richer & taking advantage of the less fortunate, peaceful protests being treated as criminalized behavior all for standing up for humanity, the pandemic, the millions of people without power & clean water at this very moment- the list goes on. Elsa is a mother who has to learn to be brave in the face of dire life circumstances. I loved her character! She's vulnerable, strong & she just wanted to be loved, I won't forget her. The mother/daughter relationship felt so genuine do It's a poetic, heart wrenching, resilient story & I absolutely loved it.

Fantastic book. Wasn’t sure if I knew much about the time period or even found it interesting prior to this book. Kristin Hannah always has a way of making historical fiction so interesting and emotional.

This as well as her other book, The nightingale, I couldn’t put down once I started. I love her writing style especially in regards to the characters. She doesn’t make them overly relatable to form a quick emotional attachment, they feel REAL. They’re complex and contradictory at times, like real people. I hope to see her write more like these two! Also, the cover art is beautiful.
A hard start but WORTH THE READ 10/10

By the end of the book it stole my heart. I will be honest it was a tough book to start. PLEASE KEEP READING. I lost disinterest but decided to truck forward with it anyway. I can’t say enough how worth it the read was. The way Kristin Hannah draws you and makes you have the emotions of the characters is remarkable. I would recommend this story to everyone. She knocked it out of the park on this one

Love love love! Basically everything I have read of Kristen Hannah’s is fantastic. Her stories bring you back to the time period & keep you actively engaged / wanting to read. They aren’t your typical romance books were everything is predictable.
Did not live up to the hype

Writing felt shallow and had to force myself to finish it. Was looking forward to this book because of it’s popularity but it was disappointing.

I have no idea why so many people disliked this book. It is raw and so real. It is sad— sure— but in the best way. I learned from this book. Cried. Felt something. Good books should change you. This is a great book.

This book is fantastic! It is gut-wrenching, heartbreaking historical fiction that takes place during the dust bowl yet parallels with a lot of what the US is experiencing in the present-economic hardship, fear of “the other,” migration, corporate greed etc. I am an avid reader and this book is now on top of my favorite books list. I couldn’t put it down and it continues to haunt me to this day.

Way too depressing No more. The tiny bit of light at the end was far too small to make up for all the sadness. The notes at the end tell us her family lost someone dear in this pandemic so it appears Ms Hannah wants to be sure everyone shares her grief. We are already there. I needed something to lift me above today’s darkness and this sure wasn’t it. I can’t recommend it to anyone and will in fact recommend my friends NOT to read it. Unfortunately I know some have already bought it. I’ll not buy any more by her. This review was inspired by another reviewer. It is NOT a feel good book at all. I liked learning more about the events of the times, but wish I would not of brought myself into this deeply dark book.
Excellent novel!

If you are looking for a realistic fiction book that is hard to put down, this is it. The book's cover design is just as beautiful as the story inside. Kristin Hannah is an amazing storyteller and I found myself really caring about the characters, as well as learning a lot about the struggles of the 1930s in America. I have also read The Nightingale by the same author, and thoroughly enjoyed both books and their strong female leads. I'll definitely be reading more by Kristin Hannah!
