Q: Does anyone have problems/issues's with their Ubbi's really smelling when they have the lid open? Despite having an empty trash bag inside....? I know some smells can linger in many trash cans, but this seems to be different.

submitted by chellybear23 - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi there! The Ubbi diaper pail is made of steel and paired with rubber seals to create an airtight container that keeps all odors locked inside. Due to its contents the inside of the pail can smell and when the lids are opened, some odors may escape, but our promise is that the odors will not permeate through the steel into the room when the lids are closed. The Ubbi diaper pail does not require any special refills and can be used with any standard size kitchen trash bag which allows for more frequent bag changing. We do have a lavender-scented odor absorbing gel as well as our lavender-scented diaper sacks to individually wrap diapers to help keep the smell at bay.

  • A: Yes, mine is currently VERY smelly and we've had it for 17 months now. Ive tried everything to make it not stink- deodorizers, bleach, letting it sit in the sun for hours- and nothing helps. This morning I walked into my sons room after him sleeping with the door shut for 11 hours and the whole room smelled of the diaper pail, and the lid was shut. Ive determined its just time to get rid of the pail sadly.

Q: Is the door on the top of pail user friendly? I think I would miss the foot pedal in the midst of changing a fussy baby.

submitted by K - 5 years ago
  • A: Yes totally easy. Agree with the response above. We've had the foot petal and it stinks up the place after opening it.

submitted byMom of three - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi there! The sliding lid of the Ubbi diaper pail can easily be used with one hand while dealing with a squirming baby! The sliding lid is actually engaged with a magnet to further keep the container airtight, but just simply slightly push down on the handle and slide the lid back. To close the sliding lid, there is no need to push down on the handle because the magnet is already disengaged so just slide it back into the closed position. The reason that the Ubbi diaper pail was designed with a sliding lid rather than a foot pedal is because the sliding lid minimizes air disruption and is only large enough to quickly drop in a tightly rolled up diaper whereas pails with foot pedals maximize air disruption and can further waft odors into the air. Thanks!

Q: What kind of trash bags will fit this pail? Thanks.

submitted by Moniii - 7 years ago
  • A: The ubbi trash bag box says they are 13 gallon

submitted byLex - 7 years ago
  • A: No special bags are required for this diaper pail. You can use Ubbi bags, your standard kitchen trash bags, etc.

submitted byJackie - 7 years ago

Q: Can this pail be used with cloth diapers and reusable cloth pail liners?

submitted by Renee - 3 years ago
  • A: hi there! Thank you so much for your interest in the Ubbi diaper pail! The diaper pail most definitely can be used with any standard size cloth liner. For reference the pail holds a 13-gallon bag so anything similar will work just fine. In addition to the cloth liners, you can also use cloth diapers!

Q: Is the white Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail, a pure white color?

submitted by tianab - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi there. Thank you for your interest in the Ubbi diaper pail! The pail comes in a variety of colors to match any nursery! Our white pail’s body is made white with a powder coated paint directly on top of the steel. It’s accent parts are made from 100% recycled material so the two white’s may not be a perfect match, but overall, it is a bright white. Please do reach out with any other questions you may have. Thanks!

Q: Can this pail be used for adult sized incontinence products?

submitted by Susie Q - 5 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your interest in the Ubbi diaper pail! The Ubbi diaper pail’s opening was designed to be big enough to fit one tightly rolled up baby diaper of the largest size. Adult incontinence products can be quite bigger, which would need a larger opening generally. This is a common question and something we have considered and talked about in great length, but we have not pursued, at least not yet. Thank you for reaching out and if you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Q: What is the ideal size of trash bag do you need? A 13Liter or which one?

submitted by Mommy - 5 years ago
  • A: Thanks so much for your inquiry about the Ubbi diaper pail! One of the primary benefits of the Ubbi diaper pail, besides the odor locking steel, is that no special bags, refills, or inserts are needed. While we do sell plastic bags, they are simply a plus and not a must! For a regular garbage bag, we recommend a 12 gallon, or 45 liter trash bag. The pail will hold as many as 55 newborn diapers, and we recommend changing the bag 2x a week, or more frequently, since no special bags are used. If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us at service@ubbiworld.com or call us at 718-422-0592 Monday through Friday, 9:30 am - 6:00 pm EST. Thanks again!

Summary of reviews

The diaper pail has received mixed feedback from guests, with many praising its ability to use regular trash bags and its sleek design. However, numerous guests have expressed disappointment regarding odor control, especially when the lid is opened. While some appreciate the ease of use and customer service, others have reported issues with rusting and the overall effectiveness of odor containment. This product may be suitable for those who prioritize bag compatibility over odor management.

Strongly considering of throwing it out. It stinks like crazy. We’ve been using it since January. And I clean it constantly and still stinks. The worse of it all I put the diapers in a dog poop bag before throwing it in the diaper pail. And it stinks so bad still.

    Permanent Stink

I received this diaper pail from my registry and was originally pleased with its size and aesthetic. However, as time has gone on, the diaper pail has started to REEK. Every time we open it the room fills with the scent of old poop. We tried to deep clean all of the parts with bleach etc, and discovered that the main issue is that the plastic seal takes on the smell of the diapers…permanently. My son is 15 months now but we’ve been dealing with this issue for at least the last 6. This product is not made to last. Don’t waste your money.

We purchased one for each of our kiddos and they’ve held up well. They really contain the smell and I love that they take regular garbage bags. I’m surprised by the negative reviews. We will occasionally set it outside just to air out for a bit but it’s a diaper pail, it’s going to smell when open just like any other garbage can.

The lid broke twice, after normal use. The first time we reached out to ubbi support and they replaced it. The process was long and drawn out. There was a lot of proof of owning the product. This isn't a quality product.

Hi, We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met. The pail should not break with normal use, and definitely not twice. We would love nothing more than to learn more about your experience so that we can continue to improve our product and our processes. Please email service@ubbiworld.com for us to make things right. This is the worst diaper pail we’ve had. We are on baby four and this is our third diaper pail. We used to have a basic Playtex diaper genie, and then moved to a nicer diaper genie. I would have purchased that same diaper pail this time around, but they apparently don’t make it anymore. I went with this one bc it advertised itself as being stink-free bc of the steel. Wrong. As soon as you open it to put a diaper in, the most horrible stink fills the room and stays that way for at least 10 min. Learning this, I made sure to only open it for literally ONE SECOND, shove the diaper in, and close it super fast. Even then, it smells. I think some amount of stink is a given, but this is awful. I only ever let the bag inside get half full before taking it out. This is where it gets really bad. The process of removing the bag of dirty diapers requires you to open it for a little bit obviously and it smells like death. It’s overwhelming and the smells lingers upstairs for at least an hour. My baby is only 2 months old and I’m considering getting rid of this and just putting a small wastecan in there and taking it out every day. That sucks considering the cost of this thing. Overall, I did give it two stars bc I like that you can use any bag instead of having to buy expensive refills.

Hi Meaghan, We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. This is concerning as the smell inside the pail should not leak into your nursery. We are crushed to hear that a parent of four had this experience with our pail, but the most important thing for us now is taking care of you. It arrived dented, which I’ve read has happened to others. Maybe Ubbi should invest in better packaging considering this is an expensive product. Super disappointed and Target offered to send me a replacement if I mailed back the other, I am very pregnant and it’s too much of a hassle when there’s a chance the replacement will have a dent too.

but this is as good as we've found. Does it stink when it's open? Yes, because there is poop in it, we're not magic. But it doesn't stink when it's closed, it doesn't require fancy bags, and it's sturdy. We've been using an Ubbi pail for about 7 years - got another after the first few years and few kids!

Worked fine when my son was a newborn but now that he is a toddler and eating solids the odor is seriously so bad even with the lid closed and sealed, it makes the whole room smell terrible. We try to clean it out with bleach and dry in the son and it does nothing! Honestly makes the smell worse. Not worth the money.

Purchased this and less then a year in it smells like something died in it. Took it apart cleaned it , spent a good 3 hours on it. Nothing helped it still stinks. It basically absorbed all the smell. Just purchased the diaper genie and magic pail to try because this one is not it! A regular trash can would have done a better job.

It holds smells in, but it's shaped in a way that induces suction on bags when you try to remove them. The bags rip, not because they're heavy, but because the can tears them. It's also unnecessarily small. I feel as though the whole point of a sealed pail is that you can use bigger bags and empty it less often because it doesn't stink.
1 reply from Ubbi team - 9 months ago
Hi John, We apologize that you're experiencing these issues with your Ubbi Diaper Pail. Removing the bag should be a breeze, not a headache for parents. As for the size of the bags, we recommend using any 13- gallon bags and this should hold about 50 newborn diapers and 25 toddler diapers. Please reach out to service@ubbiworld.com for us to remedy this issue of the bag tearing. Sincerely, Ubbi Customer Service Team

I liked this diaper pail when my son was an infant but now that we have *toddler diapers* it just does not contain the smell. You walk into the room and there’s an odor, then any time you have to open it to throw a diaper away the smell is overwhelming and takes a good 20 minutes to go away. Also, I’ve been very diligent about cleaning it- sometimes with Clorox wipes, sometimes taking it outside and washing it with the hose and dish soap then letting it dry in the sun. But it seems that one of those methods has caused it to start rusting. There’s not a good way to clean inside the lid. Speaking of the lid, it has a “lock” that prevents it from sliding open but my baby immediately realized he could just lift it up. It’s also hard to pull the bag out to empty if it’s full. I can overlook everything but the smell- and I’ve tried using baking soda in the bottom, essential oils, air fresheners, but nothing helps. Pros: The sleek look and being able to use regular trash bags. Cons: Everything else.

We have used this diaper pail for all four kids. Yes, occasionally there is a smell but no diaper pail is going to completely eliminate odor. We use the munchkin odor pods inside and change the bag twice a week. I love that it uses regular trash bags and it doesn’t immediate look like a diaper pail.
