AHA washes mainly target exfoliation and brightening. They help remove dead skin cells to improve texture, cleanse pores, even skin tone (brightening), and can help reduce visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.
Many AHA washes pair exfoliating acids with hydrating or soothing ingredients to help reduce dryness or irritation. Common additives include humectants like hyaluronic acid, moisturizing botanical extracts, and performance ingredients such as niacinamide or vitamin C in some formulas. Check the product label to see which soothing or hydrating components are included.
Common AHAs in washes include glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. Some formulas pair AHAs with a BHA (salicylic acid) in blended exfoliating treatments, and a few products list plant-derived sources (for example, hibiscus or fermented grape) as contributors.
AHA cleansers come in several forms and textures: liquids, foams, and gels are common, and some products are marketed with a 'jelly' texture or similar novelty formats.
Packaging ranges from small travel and treatment sizes (about 1 fl oz up to around 5.4 fl oz) for facial products, to larger body wash bottles (around 18.5–20 fl oz). Some body washes are also offered in refill pouches.
