Most kits target children—typically around ages 4–8 and up—while the building-science books in this set are listed for adult readers (22 years and up).

Kits cover a variety of hands-on projects, such as planted terrariums, excavating dinosaur eggs, molding and erupting volcanoes, building snap-together electronic circuits, and assembling hydraulic or mechanical model hands.

Most kits include an instruction or activity guide plus the hands-on components needed for the project: jars, potting mix, and seeds for terrariums; chiseling tools and clay/plaster eggs for excavations; molds and eruption powder for volcanoes; snap-together electronic parts and manuals for circuit kits; and plastic pieces with piston tubes for hydraulic models.

Power needs vary by kit: many require no batteries, while some electronic kits specify alkaline batteries (for example, 2 AA or 4 AA). In most cases batteries are not included, so check the package listing.

Many items include CPSC choking-hazard warnings for small parts and display suggested age guidance specific to each kit or book. Always review the package warnings and recommended age before purchase.
