Most oversized (midway) outlet covers are about 3/8 inch (0.375") taller and 3/8 inch (0.375") wider than standard plates. Some decorator-style oversized plates are larger—about 3/4 inch on all sides—to provide extra coverage.

Common materials are thermoplastic (including thermoplastic nylon), nylon, and ABS plastic. Steel is noted for the related in-wall accessory box, but the oversized plates themselves are primarily plastic.

Finishes include matte, glossy, semi-gloss and smooth surfaces. Exact textures and sheen vary by model and may coordinate with the finish of any related in-wall accessory box.

Oversized covers conceal openings, drywall damage, and surface irregularities around electrical boxes. Use them when cutouts are oversized or misaligned or when the wall finish around the box is imperfect.

Many oversized plates are UL listed, and some decorator-style oversized plates carry both UL and CSA listings. Check the specific product listing for exact certification details.

Most include color-matched mounting screws; some listings explicitly state color-matched metal mounting screws are supplied for a seamless appearance.
