Mixes balance moisture and drainage by combining moisture-retaining materials (compost and composted manure) with coarser or lightweight components that provide drainage and aeration. Many raised bed mixes are described as suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and are promoted for potted plants, container gardens, hanging baskets, elevated planters and large containers. Features that support root health include lightweight, airy textures and a mix of components that promote airflow and balanced moisture—examples are peat moss, perlite and pine bark. These ingredients and well-balanced formulations help prevent compaction, encourage vigorous root development and maintain oxygen around the root zone.
