Barnabas Collins, a member of the Collins family, is cursed and turned into a vampire, then buried alive. Nearly two centuries later he is accidentally freed and returns to his fallen family estate, where dark secrets still loom.

The story begins in 1750 and then jumps forward nearly two centuries to 1972.

The film is set in the coastal Maine town of Collinsport, primarily at the Collins family estate, Collinwood Manor.

Collinwood Manor is described as once-grand but fallen into ruin; the remaining Collins family members are struggling and hiding dark secrets.
