Products commonly claim to: balance scalp/hair pH, clarify and remove product buildup, seal the cuticle to boost shine and softness, help control excess sebum, and provide a lightweight nourishing effect.

Typical directions: use after shampooing or on wet hair/scalp, apply with a bottle tip or applicator and massage into the scalp, leave on briefly (commonly about 10–20 seconds up to 1–3 minutes depending on the product), then rinse thoroughly. Some products state no conditioner is needed afterward.

Many items state they are made for all hair types; some also highlight being gentle on color-treated hair and suitable for sensitive scalps or even fine hair without weighing it down.

Common additions include botanical extracts (raspberry, rosemary, mint), apple cider vinegar blends, exfoliants like sugar (in scrubs), and oils such as peppermint oil and coconut oil.

Many products claim to be gentle and suitable for sensitive scalps, and some explicitly state they are safe for color-treated hair. A few formulas also advertise being free of SLS/SLES, parabens, phthalates, silicones, and synthetic dyes.
