Most outdoor water tables hold roughly 4–7 gallons of water, with many models commonly around 5 gallons.

Many rigid water tables require adult assembly and may need basic tools (sometimes not included). Inflatable tummy-time mats generally inflate and deflate quickly and are described as easy to set up.

Common features that demonstrate water movement include pouring trays that create rainfall, tipping buckets, funnels and water wheels that spin, maze-like spinners and ramps, and channels or spirals that guide balls or water through the playset.

Most are made from plastic; some listings specify PVC. Several infant-targeted items are labeled BPA-free.
