Q: These pieces are 50 cents each when purchased individually... so half the price of this set. Or am I missing something?

A: You are correct. Also, in some places, it refers to a 5 place setting, and in the specifications it mentions 4 bowls & 4 plates. Why anyone would pay double is beyond me (unless it's more giftable?).

Q: If I cut up say, chicken breast, with a non-serrated blade on one of these plates, and of course it not being scratch resistant it bears the scars, will the plate degrade into my food?

5+5+5+4 does not equal 20.... is the 20th piece the box it comes in? I bought them for my kid to use for college. They look like a cheap reusable alternative to paper or disposable items. I dropped one while opening it isn't broken so that's a plus. Can't speak to the microwaveable properties but other reviews mention that they scratch easily. Some came with scratches honestly so I imagine that is true. I say buy them, the young men and women will need to eat and drink. Inexpensive. I would buy again. Perhaps get someone better at math to name the item. Have some other color choices. I give it a B-

I have them in pink and these are used everyday. I prefer these over glasswear; I live in an apartment and I haven't had to worry when moving! I'm a handwasher, so I can't review how they hold up when using the dishwasher. still in fantastic shape after 1/2 a year. Also love the options between small cups, large, and plates as well. Microwavable and dishwasher safe! I've been looking for a plastic set so my kids don't break it .. and this is perfect! If you have things you need to cut, just be aware that knives go into the plastic plate and make scratches. But it is still durable
