Poor Construction, Good Finish
Assembly is simple and the finish looks good. The wood itself is sturdy, but the construction so bad I assume it'll break within the year. Bottom half isn't level after assembly, so the whole shelf wobbles unless it's shimmed. The shelf drills are too shallow and the brass screws are too soft (or the hex sockets are too shallow, take your pick). Out of 20 screws, I stripped 2 before they were sunk properly. It's impossible to align the shelves well, because the drill holes in the shelves are spaced more closely than the countersunk holes in the frame. There are flat brass plates to firmly connect the upper and lower frame, which is great and all, but the plates are as wide as the frame pieces or wider. So the "measure-once-drill-twice" drill tolerances made one of the plates jut out from the side, just waiting for a scratch. So now I've got a wobbly shelf with two half-sunk screws and a pokey plate jutting out of it, but I guess that's better than no shelf at all.

This is an extremely nice shelf. Don’t trust the bad reviews. It’s extremely sturdy, very easy to put together AND it’s solid wood. It deserves five stars. I highly recommend and am very impressed. You very rarely get anything made of real wood at this price point. Major bang for your buck.

Looks fine from a distance
Decent item for the cost. The finish is insanely unforgiving- scratches if you look at it the wrong way. Pieces had marks and scratches when we received it but wasn’t worth the hassle of returning due to price and since it’s for a guest room.

"Espresso" color not as pictured
Pay attention to the reviews before you purchase! "Espresso" is a warm, chocolatey color - NOT black like it appears in the pictures. I bought this shelf hoping it would match some of my existing black-brown furniture. Other than that, it appears to be very good quality for the price. I might bite the bullet and try to re-paint it.

Great, stylish shelf. Parts were drilled properly. The only tool required was a screwdriver. I would say be sure to wipe it down before assembling because it had something like fiberglass all over it which was painful to my skin. Also, the color(espresso) isn’t quite as dark as the picture, but it really is gorgeous and pretty sturdy, especially for the style and price. I ❤️ it!

Got 2 shelves for the living room and they look great. Not the sturdiest shelves but they look good and were fairly easy to put together. Ours did not have any scratches or dings. You need to press down the top part significantly to press the wood dowel into the bottom part.
