I LOVE these planters, except it turns out the 20" version really does hold far more water in proportion to the other versions. in the short rectangle version think window sill or row of strawberries, i can only have 2" of soil and root things. The non-full 20" pot holds a litteral slurry of water & soil (think soup). It was fine for a tropical hibiscus under roof cover last year, but it killed a manicured 20" wide topiary Yew. The yews like moisture, but not being inundated. the other models with a clearer opening reach an equilibrium with waterline in soil close to exterior max. i think it will work with drilling some holes..

I have multiple sizes and would rate all but the 20 in 4/5. The 20in gets 0/5 bc it’s defective. It does not have a hole to pour water like the others do. I didn’t realize this until after I planted a very large and heavy tree in it. SMH. I rate the smaller pots 4/5 bc they are perfect for busy ppl who love their plants. Self watering pots are a must have for fiddle leaf fig trees. I take off 1 point bc I wish there was a way cap to close off the hole bc gnats grow in the water sometimes. I fix this by watering it with a ‘mosquito bits tea’. Extra work but worth it for my plant babies.

While it’s relatively affordable and looks nice from a distance, (it’s plastic), the self watering tray at the bottom is not something you can easily empty out. Therefore, my house has been completely filled with fungus gnats. The soil is dry, even though I water from the top. It doesn’t seem like any Target staff member has been able to clearly answer all of the questions regarding tray removal. How, literally means what are the physical steps? “Detaching” is not an answer that explains this.

does not include the string or instructions to make this work. you need something to pull the water up from the reservoir to the soil. so i bought my own string and put a couple from pot to be long enough, and it’s been good. but initially i couldn’t figure out why this was called self watering. had to google

This is a big, beautiful, and sturdy pot. However, the easy watering base is nearly impossible to use bc of the faulty design of the hole to access the water well. Other pots you can look straight into the water well area to see if there’s water but this pot, you can’t see anything because the pot itself curves back and covers the hole completely. To even use this feature to water my plant I have to physically pull the edge of the base away from the pot so that it will create a gap for water to get through. It can turn painful since it’s such a large pot and takes a lot of water and time to fill up.
