Q: Why does the description say this does not contain alcohol but the picture of the box has alcohol listed as an ingredient?
A: The best solvent to extract botanical substances and make a homeopathic liquid tincture is a water and alcohol mixture. Boiron’s method is to do so for 10 to 21 days in stainless steel containers. The tinctures are then put through hydraulic presses at standardized pressures to ensure consistent extraction of the active ingredient. The tinctures are filtered to remove all particles. Tinctures and soluble strains are then homeopathically diluted using water and alcohol. Alcohol both maintains the solubility of the active principles in the tincture and preserves them. Despite this highly precise method, a barely detectable amount of alcohol remains in the final product. The amount in Camilia is estimated to be less than 0.001% of ethanol (or 99.999% alcohol-free). Note that unlike food labels that are required to list ingredients in order of predominance, drugs labels are required to list ingredients in alphabetical order. The primary inactive ingredient in Boiron liquid dose products is purified water, even though it is listed after alcohol. While neither the product’s formula nor Boiron’s highly controlled process has changed, the labels have been revised throughout 2018 to comply with regulations that require disclosure of any detectable amount of alcohol contained in drug products intended for oral administration. The amount of alcohol in the Boiron child and baby care line is extremely low and presents no risk of adverse effects to babies or other young individuals of small weight.
