I tried this myself before giving it to my son. The straw didn't work properly and it was half air. I tried to re-insert it ans readjust it. No luck. I don't think I purchased a defective one-it seems like a poorly engineered design.

Straw doesn't work and it leaks
I was super excited to try this cup for my nine month old. It had great reviews so I don’t know if we just received a defective one. It leaks so bad and the straw actually doesn’t work at all. There is literally nothing that comes up it. I took it apart and put it together numerous times as did my husband, disappointed and will be returning.

Don’t waste your time. All Dr browns products leak and have too many parts. This is way too difficult to screw together and leaks everywhere because the weighted part pulls the straw out of the top

First time mom straw cup review.
This doesn’t leak, this is good for my nine month old and is great for her to drink out of. Cleaning is a little issue but there is something to clean out the straw to make it easier. Compare to the other brand we tried constantly leaked.
