Q: Does the side tank automatically refill the main bin or do you have to manually do it?

A: It automatically pulls water from the tank to make more ice as needed. You just refill the side tank whenever it runs out. One of the two tubes on the back connects to the side tank.

Love it so far!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is an awesome product!!! Works Great! The only downside is that it can be a little loud when the ice maker pumps in water from the tank or side tank (if you get that accessory. I would). I can live with that short noise.

Much needed; should be included with ice maker
The tank is necessary if you go through a lot of ice quickly. One suggestion: do something to better protect the silicone tubing on the back of the ice maker and the connection to the tank. GE customers have cats. Keeping cats away from something as tempting as a chewy silicone tube is not an easy task. I’ll have to come up with a chew-proof solution myself this time.

Purchased the GE ice maker and realized the best way to utilize the machine is with the side tank. We go through a lot of ice during the week and we are very happy with the purchase. Easy to set up and clean and a great visual when the tank is empty to trigger a refill.
