They have these little silicone(?) flap things on the edges and the toothbrush just caresses itself around the tooth. I don't know explain it. It's like a soft hug to the mouth while cleaning it. There is a slight learning curve to brushing with a toothbrush softer than what I typically reach for, but I'm going to stick with this pack here on out. I haven't irritated my mouth by over brushing with these brushes and I love that for me. My kids (10+) like them too.
