An addictive, immersive 90s pop star story
Honey is the coming-of-age story of Amber Young, a singer who is scouted at a young age to join a girl group called Cloud9. It is the 90s, the era of girl pop stars and boy bands. We follow Amber's rocky childhood, her ups and downs, her relationships, her meteoric rise to stardom and her journey to self-valuation and ownership of her voice and her talent. At many times heart wrenching, Honey addresses the objectification and manipulation of women and girls by the media, the double standard, tabloid lies, misogyny, power dynamics, and male control of the music industry. There is a nostalgic vibe as Amber's life is set against the events of the late 90s/early 2000s, which resonate with many of us. I loved Amber's friendship with fellow pop-star Gwen and how they supported each other even when the media tried to tear them apart. I would have liked more time with Amber in her forties, more than just a Wikipedia article at the end. Honey is a well written, addictive and immersive music story.

Unexpectedly intriguing
"I'm starting to think that no unscathed kid has ever entered this industry. You have to have some emptiness, some cavity that needs filling." -Amber Young Honey by Isabel Banta is a fantastic throwback to the 90's pop music era. Following Amber Young as she sets off to gain stardom after being discovered at a school talent show, This novel immerses the reader into the underworld of the music industry and all the highs and lows that come with trying to rise to the top. Intially I thought this book was going to be a little "bubblegum-ish" but it quickly dives deep into the struggles Amber faces internally, the difficulty of developing and sustaining relationships of any kind, and unpacking the baggage of your past in order to look to your future. This was an unexpectedly intriguining novel! Great summer read!

Great beach read
Pick up this book!! My millennial heart loved it! Honey by Isabel Banta was a fantastic read! I am extremely surprised this a debut novel. Amber Young is a rising pop star in the 90s who was first discovered by Angela Newton. It takes Amber a few years to end up with Cloud9 where she meets her best friend Gwen Miller. This is where Amber meets the famous band group ETA and comes in contact with boy band idol Wes Kingston, who she realizes looks so familiar. This novel follows her music career from childhood to early adulthood and so on. This book covers how unfair women are treated by the media and the impact they have on how other people view those that are in Hollywood. Amber was portrayed differently by the media due to her body being more developed than other female artists in the industry. Amber had to suppress who she was and had to be who her label wanted her to be in order to sell her to the people. Amber found herself despite the public’s perception of her, the complex relationships she came across and the search for parental acceptance. She gained strength and determination to improve her career. I like that the book was set up as a timeline for each chapter. It gave a better vision of when events were happening. Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for providing me with a chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honesty review.

4.5⭐
I loved this book! Think Daisy Jones, but late 90s/early 00s pop. As an elder millenial, I felt transported back to my teens of being obsessed with pop groups and artists just like described in this book. Though I did feel that some of the relationships and character development weren't fully fleshed out, I did find myself rooting for the main characters. I wish it went more in depth on some of the heavy subjects that are touched on, almost just in passing, and how those truly affected the character. Overall, I truly enjoyed this and would highly recommend it to all my friends!
