This sausage has become a disappointment; it used to be so good. I purchased some about a month ago and it had a horrible odor as it was cooked. Target granted a credit. I've tried it again and now I'm stuck with two packages that are rancid.

Fresh in grocery meats, refers to the meat being uncooked. When a meat is not pre-cooked or smoke-cooked, they are considered fresh. We ship our fresh dinner and breakfast meats frozen to ensure freshness and food safety when the product is transferred from our facilities to the store. Then the meat department typically (but not always) takes the packages out from their storage freezers, lets them defrost slightly and places them out in the refrigerated meat bunkers for consumers to purchase. We hope this helps clarify!

Great taste
Brown the sausage in a pan. Remove and then lightly cook a chopped onion. Next add a chopped pepper. Finally add your favorite sauce. Season to taste.

Great Italian sausage! We used it for pizza. I noticed that the people who rated this low complained that there was no date on the packaging. I saw the date stamped on the back of the package I bought. (The best by date on this package is 2 weeks from the date of purchase.)

No Expiration--Here's an Explanation ; )
I’d like to comment on the issue about there being no expiration date on the package. I found the same problem with their fresh breakfast sausages. I did a little research online and found out that these fresh packages are really only good for a few days. Supposedly Johnsonville expects retailers to keep these products in the freezer and only put out a few each day. There is some sort of code that retailers can decipher to know when to toss them. So if you buy them fresh, use them within a couple days. Otherwise, throw them in the freezer. It won’t hurt them to be refrozen. FYI, the ones I have gotten from Target Drive Up have always been frozen, so I know they’re ok!
