Q: How do I download new books onto this device? I reached out to the company and their help didn’t guide me. Still have the software and nothing is opening or downloading. 🙈

submitted by DesertLife - 3 months ago
  • A: When you purchase a book for the LeapStart, you will need to load the companion audio file for that book onto the LeapStart player. To do this: 1. On your PC or Mac, download and install the LeapFrog Connect application for LeapStart from www.leapfrog.com/connect 2. Launch the LeapFrog Connect application on your computer. 3. Touch the stylus pen of the LeapStart player to an inside page of each new book you own. When you touch the stylus pen to a page, the LeapStart player will say "Ask your parent to connect your LeapStart to the computer to download the companion audio for this book". 4. Use the included USB cord to connect the LeapStart player to your computer. The LeapFrog Connect software will automatically locate, download and install the companion audio files for any books the LeapStart player has been touched to.

    A great buy

My grandkids are 1 & 3. My 1 year old just likes to stab at it to make it talk, but my 3 year old is so intrigued especially the reading pages, planning on buying more books. This device was a great buy

    Yes to LeapStart and LeapReader

We’ve had this system for 3 Years now and my kid still interacts with it. Software and setup—->You will need a computer to load the books into the system to be able to interact with it. It IS NOT preloaded. It WON’T start out if the box. I have a MS laptop where I downloaded the app. It takes a few minutes and you are done. On that one opportunity I also downloaded other books even if I didn’t have the yet physically, so by the time I purchased new ones, were already in the system and saved me a ton of time. Portability—->it feels heavy specially for young kids (3 or less). Also if kid is still learning to open and close containers with latches, might be frustrating at first but honestly is like everything in life, just requires some caring guidance and practice and watching their little fingers. If you can get thru the above, this item is for you and your little one. If not, maybe wait a few more months to try again. My personal experience is that is not as engaging by itself for young 3yro… vs. a kid that already understands directions potentially reads some words and is used to safely hold a marker or pen. although if a parent would do it together you might get some engagement but don’t get discouraged if not, keep presenting the system to the kid and will slowly take it in. It’s a terrific learning and entertaining product. I would not recommend for kids that only want to doddle on a piece of paper or are yet to learn safely holding a pencil. It would just be frustrating for parents and child and you might get scared with the stylus- never been a problem for us but I do recognize it depends on maturity of the kid. Battery operated—->this product (Leap Start) is NOT rechargeable. You need to buy batteries. Additional book inserts—-> I’ve found them on Amazon. Not so many options available so get your hands on a few while you can to build a library with different levels of challenge depending on your child school grade. Compatibility—-> Sadly this system and book inserts are not compatible with the LeapReader system (stylus). Additional features—-> Allows to add a wired headset. Volume is adjustable. The wire on the stylus is short and has a quirky feel, it would take a minute to adapt to it but that’s it. Other LeapFrog system ——> If you are like me and considering the LeapStart and the LeapReader this might be helpful. The LeapReader set (booklets + pen) focus on developing reading skills. Each of the booklets have a different sound topic and the stylus will support the readers pronunciation/ sound recognition by reading out loud a entire page or word by word or spelling it. It also has sounds throughout the pictures/pages and some activities at the end of each booklet. I took my kids set to Office Depot to bind so they were able to fully open the booklet reducing the risk of accidentally ripping the page. I keep booklet, wireless stylus and charging cable in a plastic container. This one is rechargeable (the pen). I don’t recommend for kids younger than 4.

    Complicated Process for Books

Buyer beware: if you would like to purchase additional books you’ll need to download them off the leap frogg website and the process is ridiculous. I’m good with technology but the device refuses to download no matter what device I hook it up too. Customer service was unhelpful and I was unable to return the device. I would never purchase this device again for myself or for others.

    Regretable purchase

Can’t find many books, appears to be phasing them out but still selling the system…. Feels a bit scammy. Also, it is sooo heavy and bulky it’s hard for my tot to hold it on her lap in the car (which is what I bought it for) I give it 2 stars, my little one likes it though so 3 stars it is.

    2 year old approved!

I love everything about it so far. Have only had it for about a week and the batteries are already dead because my toddler loves it so much. Can't wait to buy more books for it. It's super sturdy and holds up to my son throwing it around and banging it on the ground.

My child doesn't love the toy. Usually we're fans of leapfrog products. She became bored with it quickly (3yo). The battery died in two days. The latch is frustrating to her. The stylus has a sharp point, which seems odd and dangerous for a toy rated for ages 2-5.... I wouldn't recommend this product.

My two years old's "special book"!

We call this my daughter’s “special book” and special indeed! There’s a lot to do from playing a piano, counting fruits, and following along with stories. She’s retaining information faster with this book, and she has so much fun she doesn’t even realize she’s learning. The price is unbeatable and you can buy more book inserts as well!

    MAC USERS BEWARE

If you have a Mac and that is your only computer DO NOT BUY. I have been talking to LeapFrog customer support for days trying to get this figured out. If you buy any additional books they have to be downloaded using a computer and the Leapfrog will not work with a Mac. I am so very disappointed. This was a Christmas gift and it is now 2 weeks later and we still are working on getting it connected. I had one as a child and had so much fun with it and was so excited for my son to have one, too. Hopefully I can update my review if we ever get it connected.

Not for macs but works well otherwise

This was basically impossible to use if you have a Mac. My Mac did not recognize the leapstart when connected and it took you through a lot of steps to troubleshoot, only to still not work. I connected to a non-Mac laptop and it worked perfectly fine, not sure what the problem is. It works as it should and I really love how many book options there are. Really versatile and great alternative to screen time. Just don’t buy if the only computer/laptop you have is a Mac bc it might not work.

    Broken after 3 months

Stopped working after 3 months for no reason. Just stopped working, won't charge nothing at all. Unfortunately it's outside the return window so I'm out of luck. The old version lasted forever, years. I'm afraid this one is just like many products nowadays, built to break instead of built to last.
