Max Sauerlandt (1880-1934) war ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker und Direktor des Museums für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. Sauerlandt verfasste über 40 Bücher zur modernen und klassischen Kunst. Sein erstmals 1911 bei Langewiesche in Düsseldorf erschienenes Werk über Michelangelo erreichte eine Auflage von über 200.000 Exemplaren. Aus dem Buch: "Dem tiefsten Wollen der Zeit verwandt, steht Michelangelo doch von Anfang an ihrer freien Lebensäußerung beinahe fremd gegenüber.
