Q: Can this be used in a landscape that has small rocks? Will it permeate through?
submitted by Heather - 2 years ago
A: Preen Garden Weed Preventer can be used in a rock, gravel, brick, or stone bed, around plants are listed as recommended on the label. Weeds must be removed first before application. Water in the Preen within three days of application. Note that this product may cause a yellow/brown/gray stain discoloration on the rock, gravel, or stone. We suggest they consider testing a small area first. Over time, sunlight may help to lighten the stain. Always read and follow label directions. Thank you!

Q: Can you use it in existing ground cover and it will not harm the ground cover. Just the weeds
submitted by Denise - 1 year ago
A: Thank you for your inquiry! Preen can be applied around a ground cover once it is fully established. Meaning the ground cover has fully grown/spread everywhere that you want it to. If you are wanting the ground cover to continue to spread then we would advise not to apply the Preen.
Thank you,

Q: My garden patch was not worked last yr. so is covered in grass and weeds this yr. Is there a weed and grass killer that I can use now and still be able to plant tomatoes and cucumbers?
submitted by Weed killer 4 garden - 6 years ago
A: Thank you for your inquiry! Currently we do not have any products that will work to kill/control grass and would be safe to plant tomato plants and vegetables. We would recommend contacting your Local County Cooperative Extension (which is a local college) or reputable garden center for products that will work to kill/control grass and would be safe for use where you will be planting vegetables.

Q: Will this product work on my sand beach?
submitted by Laurie - 7 years ago
A: Thank you for your inquiry! It is not recommended to be applied to a sand beach as the invisible barrier the product creates could easily be disturbed. Also this product is not safe to be applied near any water source.
None of our Preen products can safely be used around or near streams, lakes, rivers, oceans, pools, etc. You can only apply Preen as long as the area is 300+ feet away from the water. Heavy rains can wash the product right into the water source and we wouldn't want to harm the fish as Preen is highly toxic to aquatic life.

Preen kills myrtle
I applied Preen to a myrtle bed to hopefully prevent Japanese stilt grass from emerging. Killed my myrtle. I will have to have landscaper plant grass or cover with landscaping stones.

Great product
When spring comes, I weed my garden with a weed pole, easy, pick up some big ones, plant my new annuals and apply preen. No weeds grow. After a few weeks I turn my soil a bit with my weed tool and apply again. I love it. I like a weed free garden bed.

Love Preen
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have used Preen for my flower beds for the last several years. I am elderly & cannot bend over to weed so this is a godsend. Last year I started using it in my vegetable garden. Since I only plant established plants it worked really well. Between using the preen & a muclh, my garden was a breeze to care for.

Wasted money
Purchased your product for years and have never seen it work so poorly. I even reapplied and still am spending hours weeding my garden. It's either a bad batch or they're reformulated and it's now a bad product.

We are sorry to hear of the surprising results experienced with our Preen Garden Weed Preventer product! This product will only prevent new weeds seeds that are listed on the label from germinating. It will not kill any weeds that are up and actively growing. We stand behind our products when applied accordingly so please feel free to reach out to us at customerservice@lebsea.com. Thank you!

Excellent Weed Preventer
I'm a PNW flower gardener and Preen works! It is truly a back and knee saver! Every January I check my flower beds for emerging weeds and moss & pull them out or hoe. Then immediately sprinkle Preen all over the clean soil avoiding emerging spring flower bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, iris, peonies, etc. Preen keeps my flower, herb and veggie beds weed free, especially before Easter when the spring flower "show" blooms! Many people stop by to walk thru my garden and always ask how I keep weeds out of the flower beds and I always recommend them to buy and regularly use Preen b/c it works! It's a winner!

Destroys weed seed bank!
Preen works. It's not perfect as it's important to remember to put it down before there are chances of weeds starting to germinate, and if it were perfect, I wouldn't have to remember to do this in time! LOL. I have a steep hill which has been a nightmare to weed; actually somewhat dangerous it's so steep. I started using Preen every winter (I live in CA where weeds mainly grow in the winter) regularly to control the germination of weeds around the existing plantings. It gradually worked better and better. I've been using it for about 10 years now. I think over that time the weed seed bank has been exhausted and now weeding each year on this area, which used to take about 20 hours per year, now takes about 20' or less. Many people may not realize that pre-emergents actually kill the seeds. They don't stop the seeds from germinating; they kill them after they start germinating. This is ideal because over time, it will gradually kill all the weed seeds in the soil surface. A key is to not till or otherwise disturb the soil because you'll just keep bringing new seeds up to the surface and you'll never get rid of all the weeds. Preen is expensive, but it has saved my lower back and knees. Well worth it. Oh and it has never appeared to hurt any of the existing desirable plantings. I wrote this review because I saw a bunch of one star reviews and actually got a bit mad. This is a good product and it can help deal with overwhelming weeding situations. I didn't want other people to think it didn't work. It's just that, like with any herbicide, there are instructions that need to be followed carefully and the target weeds and the timing of application are critical to success.

Not impressed
I used this 2 weeks ago and followed the instructions. Weeds have already come back.,
1 reply from Csr team - 5 years ago
Weeds coming up that soon after application were most likely weeds that were already in the process of germinating by the time Preen was applied. Preen would have no affect on those weeds as it only prevent new label listed weed seeds from germinating. We recommend pulling the visible weeds and reapplying Preen in those areas. We do stand behind our products when applied according to label directions. Please contact us at www.Preen.com/feedback so we may further assist it needed. Thank you!

Absolutely worthless
I tilled my veggie garden mid March then applied Preen heavily, raked and watered in. Tilled again mid April, applied heavily again and watered in. Planted May 1. Now weeds starting everywhere. Should one should apply it so thickly that it acts as a mulch? See pic and scroll in
1 reply from csr team - 5 years ago
Preen Garden Weed Preventer should be applied to a weed free area at a rate of 1 oz per 10,000 sf on normal soil followed by a watering or rain to activate every 3 months. Tilling a treated area is a soil disturbance and will result in erratic weed prevention. For further assistance, please contact us at customerservice.com

Worked for about a month, now the weeds are coming back. I guess it beats having to pull weeds every week since I sprinkled it down. But, the price of it has gone up since I purchased it in July. So, not sure if I would try it again or not.

Great job except this year!
I have used Preen Weed Preventer and had success for the past 10 to 15 years. This year, it did not work at all. I applied it the same as I have in other years just before a rainfall, with the scoop, etc. I have never weeded more than this year! The same weeds it has prevented in the past are taking over my landscaping. I have talked to a few people who use it, including family members, and they seemed to have the same situation as I am experiencing. What happened this year? I use 4 of the 16# size. It was unfortunately a big waste of money and time this year. Disappointed.

Worked great! Just as it said it would.
I have been using Preen and Green for years and it works wonderful! It works best in the flower garden if you put it on in the early spring around plants that are at least 3" tall. Lightly scratch it in the ground and water or put it on before a rain shower. It won't work as well if you put it on and then put mulch over the top. If your going to add mulch then put it on the top of the mulch layer and scratch it in and water. If you need to, say if you have a lot of rain, then reapply after about 2 months, again take it in lightly and water. I've also put it in my vegtable but not until the plants are up at least 3 inches. I think people who have had poor results probably haven't read the instructions, this is crucial!
