Dangerous lessons in the book
My daughter picked this book out in the store. When we began to read it at home, I was appalled at what I was reading. The girl who has never learned to swim enters the pool without any supervision and it felt amazing and something strange happens to her legs. Then, the lifeguard to saves her. Later, this same little girl (who has still never learned to swim) is still drawn to the water so she sneaks out alone in the middle of the night to go swim in the ocean and then becomes a mermaid?!? The girls mother had said that the water was too dangerous so she had to go without her mother knowing. Nowhere in the book is it discusses how terrible of an it is to swim alone or enter the water without supervision or how dangerous the ocean can be. The mother’s safety concerns are never validated or balanced with the daughter’s desire to swim. It has the opportunity to discus both and teach some important lessons, but the only lesson kids receive here is that mom’s worried about nothing and the water is great so you should just sneak out and swim alone. Of course, parents should discuss what they read with their kids, but this book is pretty extreme. The author clearly never considered what lesson this book would teach kids.
