Description

Book Synopsis

The last of the Andean civilizations, Inca society was the product of complex historical and social processes of class and state formation. This study examines the contradictions, tensions and conflicts these processes engendered and explores the involvement of Europeans in Andean life after the 1530s as it resulted in new forms of exploitation and repression.

From the Back Cover

This book offers a most readable synthesis of archaeological and historical evidence about the formation and development of the Inca state and its disintegration under the impact of the devastating civil war which accompanied the arrival of the Spaniards in the 1530s.

Review Quotes

"A fascinating study in macro-sociology and state development..." --Christian Sociological Society Newsletter

"... will make a valuable addition to the libraries of those interested in the history of the Inca Empire and in the theory of state development and dissolution." --The Americas
