Description
About the Book
"This visually rich cultural atlas of Seattle explores the mercurial nature of place through the lens of one of the fastest growing cities in America. Through both experiential and data-driven cartography, Seattleness lends itself to longtime residents, newcomers to the city, and those curious about the moody borough that has brought us airplanes, grunge, gourmet coffee, and e-commerce. In the style of Infinite City and Portlandness, this illustrated book examines an expansive range of topics from UFO sightings to pinball legacies, gray skies to frontier psychology, strong women and strong coffee. Compelling infographic visuals emerge from deep dives into data, unraveling over 50 real and strange narratives about the green metropolis perched at the edge of the Salish Sea"--Book Synopsis

Review Quotes
"This 192-page visual treasure trove ...brings a wealth of professional talent to this lush and lovely project: urban design, psychology, human geography, cartography, and a zest for the weird and obscure...I appreciate Seattleness' desire to step back from the noise and offer something timeless in an ephemeral moment of fever pitched civic churn."
--The Stranger "A novel approach and one also suited to the changing city...It belongs on your Seattle bookshelf, eminently browsable, a reference to the random."
--Knute Berger, Crosscut "The new book Seattleness: A Cultural Atlas is an attempt to tell Seattle's story through data and data visualization...It's a stunner of a book -- large and colorful and incredibly pretty...Even lifelong residents will learn something new about their city here."
--The Seattle Review of Books "Visually rich with infographics, deep-dive data and more than 50 narratives about what makes Seattleites tick, this beautifully illustrated [book] will delight and educate newcomers and mossbacks alike."
--The Seattle Times "Dives into both the quantifiable and ineffable bits of Seattle, our Seattleness. The three authors, Tera Hatfield, Jenny Kempson and Natalie Ross, synthesized an astonishing amount of data to tell an undeniably human story...Using data visualization, Seattleness crystallizes abstract or complex concepts into beautiful, digestible images."
--CityArts "A collection of compelling data and creatively illustrated charts full of statistics about what makes our region special."
--Seattle magazine
