Great base build, falls short on finesse
The base idea is great, and the mechanics are mostly good. Some build steps are needlessly complex or unclear - many errors can be made during the build. There is a motor, cleverly hidden, poorly used. There is a 'clutch' mechanism to operate 4 functions, but only one at a time - but that is easy to mod with a different part. The attachment mechanics didn't need to be motorized and could of been used for the drill bit instead. With small improvements, this could of been much better

Good but a bit slow
When I got this set it had been a LONG time sins I put a Lego technic together and I wasn’t disappointed. It is well designed and set out. The instructions were well illustrated (as you'd expect) even if I did miss a pin I could see where I had went wrong and put it right. Haw all the gears worked to make it move is amazing. But move fast it does not. Bust saying that it will probably just sit on my shelf when I set it to haw I want it to look.

Money well spent
Read reviews after purchasing and I was a little concerned. The poor reviews were a bit surprising considering the reviews of the other products I have purchased were so high. I’ve read the negative reviews and my experience doesn’t reflect them at all. I’ve done multiple Technic builds and this was on par with all of them. During the build I was waiting to run into issues that would, in my eyes, justify the poor reviews but I never came across them. It’s not cheap but definitely worth the money and I would recommend.

Excellent build
Don’t listen to the other bad reviews. If you like diggers, technics and have time then this is the perfect build for you. Enjoyed every step building this beauty and goes well with my other collection.

Amazing
My son said he loved building this Volvo Excavator. The only negative was for the buster to be motorized, but overall, 5 stars.

An enjoyable built with a disappointing end result
The final drive ratio kinda ruins anything that could potentially be enjoyable. Really not much you can do with one motor. Really expensive for what you get. Not sure why they'd even produce this one

Overpriced is an understatement
the most overpriced, disappointing set I have ever bought. that's not hyperbole, this is should be classified as theft or fraud. it's easily the most overvalued set in lego's history.

It’s a nice build
I got the set for my 25th birthday and honestly I loved the build experience, it kept me occupied for a few hours and hits a seriously nice and cruisy build! Yes when it’s operating it is a bit slow but this is a great build and looks great on my shelf with the other Volvo sets! I’d highly recommend it.

Useless and has to many flaws
Useless and has to many flaws and errors in the product, it is not worth the price of the product, only one motor, super slow functioning, and lacks of range of motion for deep excavation when lowering the angle to excavate something. Bring back the Liebherr R9800 Set 42100 that was worth more than this set 10/10, was disappointed.

deeply underwhelming
It's big and looks impressive. The gearbox has some fun moments to build. But it just doesn't work anywhere near acceptably. To control the scoop in any reasonable way you need to be able to control different segments of the arm simultaneously, which you can't. It's hopelessly slow/underpowered (most of the power of the motor is absorbed by friction and backlash in the gearbox and drive train, not delivered to the actuators). The rough terrain crane 42082 similarly used a single motor and multiple gearboxes, but worked REALLY WELL (ok, the stabilisers were a bit slow) and was endlessly playable. This just doesn't. I can't imagine anyone wanting to use/demonstrate it. Most disappointing.

Better than early reviews
I was super excited to get another flagship excavator, but was discouraged by the low review ratings and price per piece. However, I decided to just buy it and decide for myself, and I’m glad I did because the build experience was well done and interesting along the way. It got my creativity going on how to improve it, make it move faster, motorize tracks, etc. so ended up being exciting. The way the movements are transferred to the arm is neat, and inspires new modifications (which is what makes Lego fun). Overall, it looks amazing, has new pieces, new build techniques, and was fun to build. The playability is not as high as the 8043, but it doesn’t take long to customize and increase speeds and functions. Plus, the new black linear actuators look great on my other cat excavator. Happy I looked past the early reviews and just bought it!

Someone at Lego is having a laugh…
…all the way to the bank. At us, the suckers that paid such a crazy price for such an underwhelming set. The price is “wow,” while the set is a solid “meh.”

A lovely excuvator with decent functions but with a nasty hefty price tag Lego just lets prices get out of control

This marks a change
I am a huge Lego fan. I have been collecting new Lego sets for more than 10 years now and have hundreds of sets. However this particular set was one I was really looking forward to because I missed out on 8043 and I grew up near a subdivision under development. I can cope with Lego raising their prices, however I did not expect them to lower the quality as well. I have since purchased my very first off brand brick hyper car and cannot believe the value for money. As there are many developing creative alternatives around I will now be comparing value before I make my purchases. Truly unfortunate, I would never have looked around if Lego had not diminished the quality. I doubt I will ever buy Lego exclusively again.

Was expecting more + a missing part...
For the price I paid, I was expecting more. While the functionality that is there is nicely situated in a control panel and the gearing is always fascinating to witness during the build, I must agree with other reviewers that the lack of mobility and no function for swinging the arm was a real minus. Just one medium sized motor?? And the functions are so slow as to make playing with the set meaningless. I love LEGO and until recently, LEGO'S ingenuity set it apart from the Chinese sets like Mould King, but they are catching up VERY fast. On top of all this, the set was missing a part that stopped construction until I found a similar piece in another set that I could borrow. I'm still waiting for the part from Denmark.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that your new set is not what you had expected it to be and that you had a piece missing. It's certainly not the experience we want our fans to have. We appreciate the feedback and will make sure that it's passed on.

Glad I read the reviews first
I'll admit I haven't got this set, however, that's due to all the 1 star reviews highlighting the poor value for money. Lego, please take all the feedback into account for future sets. Don't lose adult fans because of prices, which are increasing whilst quality of the products is reducing. There are lots of 2nd sets and Lego out there which offer far, far better value than this set, which doesn't offer anything that new or different.

Nice build
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have read the reviews and decided ti buy something else. But realty changed my mind at the lego shop! I believe it is a great kit, made me get to into the crane theme of LEGO. Currently looking to find more motorised kits to build! It needs a certain skill to build though!
