Some things are strange. They've made screen without touch option and UX is not something good to operate with map. it's very strange, I thought that ok, no touchscreen, ok I will click tons of buttons - but they are useless, only up/down, but to make left/right you need to select mode and use same up/down buttons!!! (really???) Worst engeneers' decision ever. 2) Such a small street names, a lot of space on the screen! C'mon. No, they simply make it visible only when looing in 20 cm in front of it.
Great functions

This is wonderful, I have been adding things slowly to my bike and this was the next logical step. Everything connects to it well, and I have not had any issue with it.

Overall I like this device. I had an edge 520 previously so this operated similarly. I miss not being able to put the battery life on my customized screen. Unless I am misunderstanding you can leave the device in the sun while turned off and it will charge 1% and it would take days to charge. I wasn’t sure what % my battery while riding. When I finished my ride I found it was under 10%. Would love to be able to see at a glance what level the charge is at like l could with my 520. Also I would like to be able to choose what alerts I get. I like getting text alerts however I don’t need to be told when it is hot, cold, windy etc. often times it is not even that windy. I also noticed it alerts me when there is a sharp turn ahead … as I am heading into the turn. so not best to be looking at the device going into a sharp turn. Can that be turned off. Overall, it provides what I want and some features I either don’t need or want.
Not sure about the 540, not as relieable as my 530

I synched my previous 520 thorough connect app. Had to go back add my data manually. Added my Favero Assioma's worked finethe first ride. Always have to add my power meter manually. Should of stuck with the 530, but that connection got hot and melted the connector. It would charge but not transfer data. I have been a loyal customer for over a decade now. I own 2 garmin watches, epix gen 2 sapphire addition. I like all these products, but this 540 has been a letdown on every ride.

1. The display is dull, hard to see in shady areas. Someone is prioritizing battery consumption over readability 2. Notifications use the smallest font available making them impossible to read. Garmin should have a strict rule that no reader glasses are required to read any message.

garmin 540 solar, I don’t have much good to say about. It was difficult; to set up, to set up the tasks screens, to shut off, to connect to my phone (it’s still not set up to my phone), I ride early in the morning and I can’t keep the bright setting on. Have a hard time trying to clear previous ride information….

I bought this about a month ago and have used it for about 10 rides. It has many more features than I was aware of... Still learning it. It's very user friendly- I don't consider myself 'techy' but I'm easily able to do what I wanted to do with it. So many functions, options, screens... Syncs so easily with my phone, watch and HRM... Just an awesome little piece of equipment! (Oh, and when I get near a busy highway- it alarms me of a high traffic area!! WHAT?!?!)

Lots of info for the stats lover. The screen however is always a bit dark and goes darker as the light fades.
Out with the old (520), and in with the new (540)!

Needed to replace a tired 8 year old Garmin Edge 520! Decided on 540 Solar - solid middle ground solution for my needs. Packed with features - some I hope to leverage someday! Good form factor, new optional mount charging capability compatible with my many existing mounts, USB-C port (yay!!), fast performance, reliable saving/uploading of rides, big battery capacity/life super, solar charging is awesome!!! Needed reliability of buttons vs capacitive touchscreen for wet conditions and some gloves. Treated myself to an orange silicone protector case for extra protection for bumps and drops. Nice. Overall running well, zero issues, very happy. Still learning new features!

Coming from a 530 the display is a bit more vibrant, the solar is also very handy, have to charge the unit a bit less than I did with the 530.

After my beloved Edge 1000 finally died I invested in the Solar Edge 540. It’s relatively easy to use and practical it is hard to see. its much smaller than the Edge 1000 and unless it has light right on it its very difficult to read. When you are going 20 mph plus on a bike you don’t want to have to stare for long periods at the handlebars.
Rubbish

I wanted the simplest GPS for MTB weekend warrior work, just to follow a track and record time and distance - and this is the simplest Garmin offer - way over the top, suited to serious bikers with all the gadgets and gizmos that make them 'faster'. There is little intuitive logic built in. I will insure it and then throw it over a cliff.
