Q: is there a monthly charge?

submitted by kelli - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello kelli, Out of the box, the Ring Video Doorbell is designed to keep you connected to your home in real time, no matter where you are. The optional Ring Protect Plan is available for as little as $3/month per device. With this, videos of each ring, motion, and live view event are stored in the cloud, allowing you to review, share, and save them at your leisure. Here is an informative article regarding the plan options currently available: https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/categories/115000385923-Protect-Plan-Support. Without a plan, you will still receive real time motion and ring alerts, as well as have access to the Ring Live View feature. If you are having trouble accessing Live View quickly enough, try downloading the Rapid Ring app. Rapid Ring app works in conjunction with your regular Ring app, but enables you to get notifications faster and respond faster. We invite you to reach out at https://community.ring.com/ if any additional information is needed regarding the Ring Protect Plan options. Scaring people into buying monthly premium service.

3 out of 5 stars
Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
Anon - 23 days ago
I have noticed since the 30 day trial for the premium service ended, I am getting many false “motion detected” and “person detected” alerts. It seems to me that once the free trial ends they are using this as a scare tactic. In most cases I’ve been home so I can look at the door to see if there’s anyone there. I’m getting around 2-4 false alerts per day since this trial ended. It makes me think Ring is scaring people into purchasing their monthly subscription. I imagine that if I wasn’t home and I kept getting alerts and I couldn’t review the videos, it would scare me into thinking someone was there when it’s all false alerts. I think it’s a sales tactic to scare people. I’m considering taking it down all together and going with a different free door bell service. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because the camera image is clear, and the microphone/speaker option is good quality. I will not be scared into buying the monthly service.

Hi Anon. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We understand the importance of having all relevant product information prior to purchasing. The Ring Protect Plan provides valuable capabilities, such as accessing paid features and the ability to save, download, and review footage captured by your Ring device. We can definitely provide you with more information regarding the concern mentioned in your review. It sounds like there was some confusion regarding the optional Ring Protect Plans. The Ring Protect Plan is a subscription that gives you access to paid features for your Ring device, such as Smart Alerts. Smart Alerts allows you to refine your Motion Alerts to distinguish between people and other motion With a Ring Protect Plan, you can also save, review, and share video recordings from your Ring devices to your Ring account. Without a Ring Protect Plan, you can still view real-time video for Ring doorbells and cameras and answer doorbell notifications when they happen, but you don’t get video recordings of those events. I now know why it was on sale… Missing a piece and does not work properly… Gives reflection at night. And it seems ridiculous now, to have it attached to the outside of the house- somebody could just rip it off - it’s counterproductive to the purpose of the product.

I’ve seen all the ads for a ring camera and wanted to give it a try. We’ve been having issues with theft and wanted to protect ourselves. Something that was not made clear, is that this product is solely subscription based. If you do not pay $100 a year or $10 a month, this camera is useless. The only thing you can do without a subscription is “live view”, meaning you don’t get notifications of people at your door, you cannot save videos or clips, etc. When you get the camera, it automatically gives you a free trial- so you don’t know what the camera is like without a subscription. We decided we wanted to see what it was like without the subscription, and it deleted EVERYTHING. All past clips, saved/stared clips, etc. I paid the $10 to resubscribe the same day it ended, and all past clips are still gone and it took hours for the camera to go back to normal. We’re not going to sit on live view 24/7 to ensure everything is secure, and the fact that we bought a $100 doorbell camera just to find out if we want it to work we have to pay monthly is insane. Without a subscription, this is just decoration so you’re forced to pay. I wish I could return this, but the return window is too small and you’re in the free trial the entire time so you have no idea how useless this is without paying subscription fees.

Hi Faith. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We understand the importance of having all relevant product information prior to purchasing. Being able to save, download, and review footage captured by your Ring device is a valuable feature of the Ring Protect Plan. We can definitely provide you with more information regarding the concern mentioned in your review. It sounds like there was some confusion regarding the optional Ring Protect Plans. The Ring Protect Plan is a subscription that gives you access to paid features for your Ring device. With a Ring Protect Plan, you can save, review, and share video recordings from your Ring devices to your Ring account. Without a Ring Protect Plan, you can still view real-time video for Ring doorbells and cameras and answer doorbell notifications when they happen, but you don’t get video recordings of those events. I love that it is pretty much ready to go. I did however need help screwing in the anchor part to my wood trim to mount the camera. If I didn’t have that help it would have been much harder for me to install.

After a couple of months, everything sounds Statie, tried to fix it with tech-support to no avail. I also have to pay 399 a month for a doorbell that does not work. And I haven’t even had it a year and it’s a piece of junk.

Hi Chris_5_. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We know how essential it is for the two-way audio to work properly on your Ring Wireless Video Doorbell, so you can speak with and hear whoever is at your door. The two-way audio is an invaluable feature of the Ring Wireless Video Doorbell. We would love the opportunity to work with you to ensure your device is working as intended. It sounds like the audio from your device is not clear. You can troubleshoot poor audio or video quality in Live View by making adjustments to your router. Here are the most common reasons you may be experiencing audio or video quality issues: If live view audio and video are poor but recordings are okay, there could be a poor connection between your mobile device and the server, or there could be a connectivity issue between your Ring doorbell or security camera and the router. Things to try first: Check for low upload speeds. To determine whether or not the poor video or audio quality is caused by low upload speed, run a speed test from your PC or mobile device while connected to the same wifi access point to determine if your network can support Ring devices. Check for poor signal strength. A poor wifi signal can cause connectivity with your Ring device to be unreliable. Check the Device Health section of your Ring application to ensure the device’s RSSI is within an acceptable range. If the solutions above don't solve your problem, you can try manually changing the channel on your wifi router. The Ring Doorbell (wireless) worked great for about one month, until it needed to be charged. I charged it, didn’t change anything and put it back in place and now it doesn’t work at all. It’s on and the app says it’s online and has plenty of battery power, but it doesn’t pick up anything-deliveries, people, etc. So, it’s now pretty much worthless. I don’t know what happened. Like I said, I didn’t change anything else when I recharged it. I tried rebooting the device through the app-didn’t work. I reset my router-didn’t work. What a waste of money! And it’s now outside the return period so I’m stuck with a worthless device. Thanks Ring!

I wish the motion detection had a longer range , but other than that I love it. I bought an attachment for my apartment door and it was an easy installation. The video quality is clear and the battery life is great.
