A New ApproachEach generation of Ruark’s R1 has been an evolution of the original but with R1 Mk4 Ruark wanted it to be more progressive both in design and performance. Using a precision molding process has allowed them to gently profile the enclosure providing a fresh new look and the perfect surface for their new Light Cream and Espresso finishes. With acoustic treatment the enclosure is sturdy and acoustically inert providing the ideal housing for the electronics and NS+ driver. Enhancing the design further is a beautiful hand-crafted slatted wood grille. This brings added sophistication and creates a timeless Eames like vibe but overall the design is still unique and distinctly Ruark.

Having been a loyal customer of Ruark due to the quality of the products, I thought it was worth upgrading my bedside alarm. Great design, great sound (DAB and Bluetooth for music in my case) and packs a punch you wouldn't expect from the size. Easy to set up. I very seldom bother with reviews but I feel Ruark deserve the time for delivering excellent sound (they haven't forgotten the main point!) in great designs at an affordable price. Very happy customer.

We bought this radio about 6 weeks ago and have used it everyday since. We absolutely love it and are often remarking how glad we are we made the purchase. The sound and build quality are excellent. We went with the darker Espresso colour, which has a classic retro feel. Small enough to fit in with your decor and look stylish but not obtrusive, AND big on sound. The quality of sound from it is excellent: full and nicely rounded, - just right . Excellent sound whilst outside too, the quality remains and isn’t lost in larger open spaces. On that note, we bought the backpack battery to be able to move it round the house and use it in the garden. So glad we did. This is an excellent add on and we would thoroughly recommend. Simple controls and easy to switch between functions. We love that it is a Bluetooth speaker too. If you are fed up with a well known voice activated music player not listening properly and want quality radio and music at a simple one touch of a button like I did, this is the product for you! We are very impressed. This has been our best and favourite purchase over the last couple of years. Thank you Ruark for bringing joy to our home everyday!

I bought the R1MK4graded version (who can tell?) at the beginning of August to use as bedroom clock radio. However as I was off to Cornwall for two weeks I thought I would take it with me in case the place we were staying in didn't have a very good radio. It turned out to be a basic Roberts radio that sounded so tinny. So I set up my new purchase and wow! Even my wife and daughters who usually say, what another gadget dad were so impressed. The rich deep sound coming from this small package is unbelievable and as mentioned previously is a graded version but not a single mark on it. Have listened to it continuously on holiday but I wonder if it will be wasted as a bedroom radio when it will only be on for a short while each day! All in all a great purchase.

I’m well used to the high quality of Ruark having enjoyed ownership of an R5 for several years. So, when my bedside radio needed replacing there was only one place to go. The R1 is a beautiful piece of equipment. The sound is classic rounded radio sound - no harsh edges and customizable should you find the need to do so. Construction is top notch and the menu navigation simple and comprehensive.

Almost a month now, great sound, picks up FM stations other radios don't. Perfect size for the nightstand. The display light is bright at night, haven't figured out how to dim it.

I was very lucky to receive my Ruark radio as a birthday present from my brother who also has one. Very easy to set up & I’ve since purchased a remote control. No problems with reception. The time on the digital clock is very accurate, only one pip out ! I like the display on the front rather than on the top. The display showing which track is being played is always up to date. It pairs well with my iPad via Bluetooth so I don’t need to use my Bose speaker. A great radio which I’m very happy with.

I purchased this to replace my 25 year old Bose clock radio. It is a clean compact radio and the sound is crisp and clear, only negative was that didn't realise that the remote was not included, so will have to order one.

We have the R1 for two months now and are very happy with it. Your R1 has both a beautiful design and an excellent sound. It is certainly an outstanding product, comparable maybe only to the Grundig Concert Boy 1967 which had a fantastic sound in these days and which I enjoyed listening to for more than 40 years. Although I did not explore all of the features of the R1 yet, I would like to make some little remarks for possible further consideration, if you like. 1) The AC plug seems to me being a weak spot. If you unplug it, a tiny ledge has to withstand the full force. The sockets in Germany or Austria are quite strong. There is a good chance the AC plug will brake soon. This ledge is also the spot where material fatigue will come to effect - so it will brake there a little later. A radio in this price range could have another technical solution or a durable plug for each of the socket-markets. 2) The standard factory setting of the sound offers too much of bass. Probably it is designed for popular music. Language/speaking, old movies or classical music require less bass. So, factory settings could be a bit more neutral. 3) The range of bass / treble could be a bit larger. 4) To adjust sound there are only 3 variables: volume, bass and treble. Old radios had knobs for each of them which was very practical because one could adjust them directly, easily and very quickly. Today - and also in Ruark R1 - bass and treble are hidden deep in the menu and an adjustment requires many clicks. Too many. Volume is placed on the top level of controls. Bass and treble should be near this level. 5) In FM, the text is sometimes jumpy and therefore hard to read. Perhaps there is not enough storage. 6) The size of the letters could be a little bit larger. 7) There is a redundancy of >>/ or <>/ or <

Have had the Ruark R1 about a month and am really enjoying it as a wake-up radio alarm with all the easy to use features it has for that. It also has great sound when I want to connect Bluetooth audio. One disappointment is the remote. I have put new battery in but it only reaches about 1 metre, which is useless when lying in bed and don't want to get up to control the Ruark sitting on my desk 3 metres away.

This is easily the most expensive small radio I have ever purchased but the sound quality more than justifies it. As a bedroom or kitchen radio it is outstanding and so easy to operate. My main station of choice on this radio is Classic FM for which it is ideal.

Bought this as part of a smart speaker detox and it is a great device. Sound quality is excellent and the controls are intuitive and easy to use. It feels really solid and the dab reception is really good. Bluetooth connection is solid with good range. Overall the perfect thing to replace the Alexa spy speakers.
