about this item

During the WWII era, nine-year-old Bruno's childish, hazy understanding of the war, his father's position in the ****** government, and a place he calls "Out-With" lends this stark, harsh fable a coating of cloudy unreality. When Bruno's family is moved to Out-With because the Fury has high hopes for his father's advancement, the boy is terribly bored and seeks out the people in striped pajamas that he sees on the other side of a huge fence. After making friends with Shumel, a boy his exact age, Bruno knows he can't tell his family what he has learned. With an eye on creating awareness of the ignorance of modern times, Boyne has written a thought-provoking and sorrowful story.
Berlin 1942

When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

This book was such a good read, not too long but still very interesting. Especially having some prior knowledge of this time period's history really helped and helped me figure out the subtle "nicknames" for famous people and places. Overall, this was an amazing book and will soon, if it already has...see moreof the reviewer's review
