Cherry bomb
Cherry Bomb has always felt like one of Tyler’s most misunderstood projects and honestly that’s what makes it so special to me. It doesn’t try to be easy to love. It’s loud, messy, chaotic, sometimes even annoying, but hidden underneath all of that are some of the most beautiful and creative moments he’s ever put out. The title track Cherry Bomb is straight up noise, like an explosion of sound that’s hard to even process on first listen, but then right after that you get Find Your Wings, which is this smooth, jazzy, almost comforting track that feels like it belongs on a completely different album. That kind of whiplash is exactly what makes the record so interesting. Not everything hits though. Keep da O’s has always been a weak point for me. The hook is repetitive, it drags on, and it doesn’t really add much to the album. Compared to the ambition of the other songs it just feels like filler and I usually skip it. But then you’ve got Smuckers with Kanye and Wayne, which is just insane. All three go crazy in their own ways and the beat is ridiculous. And the closing stretch with 2Seater into Okaga, CA might be one of the most emotional and beautiful things Tyler has ever done. Cherry Bomb is far from perfect, but that’s the point. It’s experimental, raw, fearless, and unapologetic. Tyler didn’t care if people hated it, he just made it.
