Oriental poppies grow well in poor to average soil; however, soggy ground should be avoided as they hate wet feet. The prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. After flowering, allow the poppies to die back during the summer heat, as excess watering will kill them.

Description

Oriental poppies (Papaver) are long used by gardeners in a range of landscape situations. Planting poppies is simple and rewarding when their blooms appear. The clumps will become larger each year but will never be invasive. They can be forced indoors with special treatment. They also make for stunning cut flowers, but you will have to sear the ends of freshly cut stems with a match. As they have appeared on ravaged battlefields, they have come to symbolize death and rebirth. This mixture consists of a variety of colors that will match or blend into any garden's color scheme.
