Kick shields and body protectors are commonly made from leather or leather-like shells and technical fabrics. Typical cover materials include genuine leather, faux leather (vegan leather), nylon and polyamide. Inner layers are usually foam or dense padding (see padding/foam FAQ for construction details).
Common closure systems include hook-and-loop (Velcro) closures, strap closures, and adjustable shoulder or back straps. Many protectors list multiple adjustable straps or hook-and-loop fastening to ensure a secure, customizable fit.
Most shields and protectors use multi-layer foam constructions for staged impact absorption. Common approaches include triple-layer or triple-density padding, stacked inner foams, and molded high-density infused foam. Some listings note foam thicknesses in the neighborhood of about 2.5–3 inches for heavy-impact models.
To reduce heat and improve comfort during back-and-forth drills, several protectors include moisture-wicking liners, breathable mesh or vent panels, and ventilated coach pads. These features help move sweat away from the skin and increase airflow.
Large strike shields typically feature multiple reinforced handles positioned on the top, sides and back. Handles are often heavily padded and reinforced to provide secure grip points for carrying, positioning and bracing against strong strikes.
