Plastic playpens typically come as multiple-panel setups that can be arranged as octagons, hexagons, houses, squares or rectangles. They are usually foldable or portable and allow adding panels to expand the enclosed area.

Designs use extra-tall heights to deter jumping and closely spaced bars or ultra-dense pipe spacing (about 1.37 inches) to prevent squeezing. Some gates add extra bars or tighter spacing near walls to reduce gaps.
