For cutting-board mineral oil: wash and fully dry the wood, apply oil with a clean cloth, let it soak for about 2–3 minutes, then wipe off excess. Routine maintenance is about once a month; for new items apply daily during the first week and weekly for the rest of the first month. For aerosol furniture sprays: shake well, spray onto a cloth (or hold 6–8 inches from the surface) and wipe the surface.

Wood conditioners and oils moisturize and protect wood, help restore and revitalize appearance, and can restore shine. Many spray formulas leave a noticeable sheen without feeling overly oily.

Some furniture spray formulas explicitly advise against use on unfinished wood and unfinished leather. By contrast, cutting-board mineral oils are intended for finished kitchen wood items such as cutting boards, butcher blocks and utensils.
