Q: Can I get additional shelf boards?

submitted by Hannah - 3 years ago
  • A: I agree with Hannah, I love these shelves, I have two of them, but I would really, really like to be able to purchase additional shelf boards. As tall as these bookshelves are, I could easily fit six or even seven shelves into the case and fit more books. Please, Target! Make purchasing additional shelves available!

submitted byKatie - 2 years ago
  • A: Not a helpful response at all from Target. Additional shelves definitely need to be offered for this case.

submitted by - 2 years ago
  • A: It's so cheap you could just buy another bookshelf and use it for the shelves.

submitted byRobin - 3 years ago
  • A: Robin was right-on with her response. She was not suggesting purchasing shelves separately.

submitted byMelissa - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Hannah - Thanks for stopping by! This bookshelf is great to keep you organized, however you cannot buy additional shelves for this. We hope this will work for you! - Katrina

Q: How big is the actual box before assembly? Planning to order for pick and need to know if a truck is needed. Thank you!

submitted by Lee - 2 years ago
  • A: No truck needed I took one home in the trunk of a Camry.

submitted byLotus - 2 years ago
  • A: If this item is about 72” tall, I don’t see where the box dimensions are smaller. Unless the side panels have to be put together, instead of arriving in one piece, it doesn’t add up. Hoping someone can clarify this so I can be sure it fits in a car. Thanks!0

submitted bySue - 2 years ago
  • A: I watched the video and it shows that the sides are two pieces that is why the dimensions don't seem to add it. I have put together other ones similar to this and they have held up very well.

submitted bybellasnana - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Lee - Great question! The box dimensions are approximately 12.32" L x 39.57" W x 7.2" W. We hope it will be the perfect addition to your stylish space. - Taylor

submitted byTaylor - 2 years ago
    Target staff support
  • A: @Sue, yes you need to put the side panels together. They’re split in two in order to fit in the box better. You can see the seams in the photos

submitted byembeck - 2 years ago

Q: What size (diameter) are the shelf pegs for this book case? I misplaced a few in my last move. (Otherwise, I can attest to having had this for 10 years now and it has held up very well. Great choice for a base product to fit someone just starting off)

submitted by Rena - 2 years ago
  • A: Great advice from Laura to pick up those replacement pegs at the hardware store. The 1/4" pegs are indeed too big. Just keep in mind you're going to have to get metal 5mm pegs. Wooden pegs don't seem to come in that size.

submitted byMarcus - 1 year ago
  • A: I was able to use a standard 5mm shelf pegs for these. You can purchase them from any hardware store. 1/4" pegs are too big.

submitted byLaura - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Rena - Thank you for inquiring about this bookcase. If you are missing components of this order and need replacements, please reach out to us via our online chat service or call us at 800-591-3869. Thank you for asking and have a great day! - Geoff

Q: Do they label the boards for assembly now? Tried to buy these before, but no parts were labeled making assembly extremely difficult as directions state by A,B,C etc.

submitted by Kerrison - 2 months ago
  • A: No they are not labeled, just put a few together myself. Still easy enough, just seperate and keep A+B and C+D together (C and D have the large holes for the 4 connecetor screw pieces.

submitted byDavid - 2 months ago

Q: Why is there a CA Prop 65 warning on this? Specifically what is the danger? Is it only if it’s broken or does it give off fumes? Please help- this is disarming

submitted by El - 1 year ago
  • A: Most likely, I wish they would answer directly but they like to dance around this question..... all this cheaply made furniture usually has "preservatives" in it unfortunately.

Q: Can it be assembled without the backing, so the wall shows through? Or will this make it less stable?

  • A: Yes it can, I higly doubt the backing material adds and sort of stability. I have 2, they are sturdy enough as they are.

    submitted byhs66 - 5 months ago

Q: I know this is an inexpense bookcase, but can doors be added to it?

submitted by - 2 years ago
  • A: As long as they are not too heavy I don't see why not. You should def anchor it to the wall using the hardware they give you if you do that though

    submitted byhs66 - 5 months ago
  • A: Hi tanyano - We're glad you asked! This bookcase is designed to be used as-is so we don't recommend modifying it. Thanks for stopping by! - Gao

Q: Does the back board attach with nails that are hammered in or plastic pieces that are inserted into preexisting holes? The one with plastic pieces seems to work better and I want to know if this will be more similar to those.

submitted by - 2 years ago
  • A: There's a little guide tool that works really nice when hammering.

    submitted bynrg2lrn - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Caldwell - We appreciate you shopping for furniture at Target. The back panel of this sturdy bookcase is attached with a hammer and nails. Thanks! - Philip

Q: The dowel screws have a quarter inch of rough metal between the screw threads and the smooth dowel screw, after the screw threads are sunk into the piece. Does that quarter inch of rough metal get jammed into the joining piece somehow?

submitted by Tina - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi, I struggled for hours with the same issue with completing step 7 — what worked for me is to pull it back out and then hammer the wood dowels to make sure all 4 are as far in as they can be. Once that’s done, you should then be able to put it back almost flush with the middle shelf and then turn the cam screws to tighten all the way to successfully complete step 7. I know this is an old post but I hope this helps others.

  • A: Hi Tina - Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to follow the instructions manual carefully when assembling this bookcase for the best results. Have a wonderful day! - Gao

Decent library wall on the cheap

Andrea - 5 days ago, Verified purchaser
These are sturdy, light but hold a LOT, easy to put together. I just need some tweaks and wood trim and it will be a proper library wall that DIDN’T cost $175 each at Ikea (although I did reaaaaally want the Billy’s for their HEIGHT). Mostly happy with my these. They do the trick. Only cons would be that they really should have ONE MORE SHELF in the box, optional for that ridiculously large bottom section. With the majority of the (heavy d/t books) shelves clustered at the top, I think they’re potentially too top heavy when full. But, to be fair, pretty stable unless you deliberately wobble them. Definitely keep the toddlers OFF!! That bottom section is going to, by default, hold only one or two (lighter) (taller?) items, or random stuff, because it’s too awkward a space for regular books unless you have a LOT of coffee table books. Top heavy means tipping. I worked in a high end furniture company and we gave tip kits away like candy free at the desk, but I don’t know anyone who actually USED them. I have baseboards and a slightly wonky floor so these kits won’t even reach my walls, and I can’t put this much strain + holes on the walls in a rental just for a bookshelf that should stay upright. Thankfully no kids here. Maybe design the base to have a 1-5 degree tilt (or whatever the engineers say) so they automatically can’t lean forward when filled? Only one of mine leaned, and I used felt furniture pad under the bottom walls to tilt it back, but they’re ALL almost 2 inches from the wall because of the baseboards so no tip kit.

Clearly paid full price for a used, un-buildable bookcase

Opened the box and found what had clearly been a dismantled USED bookcase with tile stickers all over it, broken bits, ripped and squished instructions. I am shocked at how low quality this is and shocked that Target is selling things that are clearly well used as brand new items. Makes me worry about safety and hygiene for items in this and other areas. Absolutely inexcusable.

I have bought these Room Essentials shelves for several years now (I currently have ten in the house for our many books). They are sturdy, reliable, easy to assemble, and very affordable. I love that they come in three wood types. I know that often I have to wait until the University starts bringing their students back for Target to have them adequately in stock, but I love them so much for the reasons stated above that I am willing to wait. I highly recommend these shelves.

Very easy to put together. Hardest part was lining up the backer board pieces. I overlapped the pieces the wrong way so it showed on the front. I found some wallpaper pieces to use and plan on adding for some extra color. Would buy again.

Not sturdy; book case wobbles

1 out of 5 stars

Homebaker - 16 days ago, Verified purchaser
This isn't sturdy at all. The furniture is split down the middle and is merged with two holes connected with metal pegs. The case wobbles from side to side and the pegs will not be reinforced properly without metal inserts, which this bookcase did not come with. To make it sturdy I'll require some metal plates on the side to prevent wobbling.

I put it together with no major problems. I almost missed using the four metal washers to support the back panels. I needed to look at the instructions extra, extra carefully. I am using this for mostly storage. But if I was using this "bookshelf" for books, I would want an extra shelf. The brown is very dark. Pretty good for what I paid.

The bottom 2 shelves create so much wasted space. I wish this bookshelf had 6 shelves to space evenly. The books on the bottom shelves look silly with so much vertical space above them. This would be a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the awkward empty space. I will not be keeping these.
