Description
IT ALL STARTS WITH GREAT SOIL!
We created this premium blend soil specifically for potting because we realized how crucial the proper ratios, drainage, and nutrient factors are. That's why this soil includes natural, organic, and nutritious fertilizer as well as dolomitic limestone and yucca extract for moisture control. We're also proudly Peat-Free! Why? Because Peat is one of Mother Nature’s most important stores of carbon. Instead of imported peat, the base of our soils is made from upcycled plant matter & wood fines from around the United States! Combine this item with other Back to the Roots products including Seeds, Seed Starting Pots, Plant Foods, and Raised Beds for a completely organic solution. NPK: 0.18-0.04-0.04.

A: Hi Jay! Thank you for asking. The All-Purpose Potting Mix is an alkaline mix, but we do include dolomitic limestone to help balance the pH. Feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with more questions or concerns!

I bought 2 bags. One bag was completely fine, the other was covered in white and orange mold. The smell was horrendous. I’m not sure I’d buy again given the 50/50 chance of getting a moldy bag.

Mushroom dirt

Do not buy this dirt. I used it right after buying, and it grew mushrooms in all my plants that I used this soil for. One of them also started getting fungus flies from it.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 18 days ago
Hi MK! We understand your concern. We sell an organic living soil, which means it's not made of synthetic ingredients and it hasn't been fumigated/sprayed with highly toxic chemicals. The fungus is there because our growing medium is biologically alive and healthy, with a diverse microbial environment. And because we're quirky growers over here at Back to the Roots, we think this phenomenon is an informative part of the process of connecting people to the food system and how plants really grow! Here are some tips to get rid of the mushroom and prevent further growth: Remove the caps – Pick out the mushroom and remove the top ¼” of soil. Doing this means removing the source of the spores which results in mushrooms growing in the soil. Use an organic fungicide – Adding fungicide to the plant’s soil may help with eliminating mushrooms, but if not all of the fungus is killed, the mushrooms will return. You may need to try this treatment several times before the fungus is killed completely. We are here to help, please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com, and our support team is there to help!

Terrible. Basically a bag of mulch
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 15 days ago
Hi Courtney! We understand your concern. At Back to the Roots, we are committed to creating organic gardening products that are great for our plants AND the planet. Instead of internationally sourced peat in our soil mixes (that many are linking to widespread carbon emissions), we are using all local, regional, upcycled organic matter — a 100% USA Made & Blended Soil brand. Much of our local material is upcycled bark fines from pre-consumer waste streams that would otherwise be incinerated for energy, land-filled, or otherwise disposed of. Most of the potting soils and soil amendments found in retail stores have nearly 60% peat moss. Those products will have a finer texture and feel more spongy to the touch. Our soils may look and feel different depending on regionally sourced inputs. However, each bag of soil is 100% guaranteed to grow the garden of your dreams and the regional aged wood & bark fines help improve airspace/moisture retention and help break up difficult clay soils. The finer, more decomposed particles hold a tremendous amount of water and improve fine soil texture by forming colloids (clumps) which helps improve moisture and air infiltration. Larger particles also help wedge the soil apart and keep it from compacting over time. Lastly, as wood and bark fines age (decompose) in big moisture and temperature-controlled piles, they accumulate huge populations (millions to tens of billions per gram) of beneficial microbes. These microbes consume the carbon and minerals in the wood and as your garden grows, they transform it into nutrients for your plants. We really appreciate you growing with us, and are excited for you to grow your plants in our soils. However, we also understand that texture is important, and if you are not satisfied, please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with a copy of your receipt and we can help with a refund.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is an excellent potting soil. It isn't just full of wood chips and twigs that I have found in other potting mixes. You can plainly see that the mix is filled with nutrient dense organic matter. The plants I have started using with this soil are more than thriving. I would highly recommend this potting mix also, because the price range is fantastic for the quality.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Back to the Roots Premium Blend All Purpose Potting Mix has been wonderful. I used it to re-pot my windowsill plants into larger pots when they got too big. I had been worried about moving them, but they seem to be thriving.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The last time I bought potting mix it seemed to have a very hard time absorbing water, when I would water my plants the soil would just float to the top. This "better" potting mix has worked much better when it comes to watering plants. It absorbs how it should and all the plants that I re potted with it all remained alive and are thriving. An open bag does seem to attract bugs faster than other soils have.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product free to try. It came just in time to put in the last of my winter herbs. It was just enough to fill my herb planters. It seemed to help my herb sprout faster than the other potting mix I've used.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love plants and this soils was great for repotting some of my plants that have outgrown pots or I needed to separate. It is also a great soil for my self-starting avocado plants. I have now have 4 avocado plants that I used this soil for planting them and they are doing great. I also use some of the soil to add to older plants that need some new nutrients. It has helped perked them up a lot.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm always cautious switching to a new potting soil for my house plants. So far all my new plants have survived with this new potting mix. So I can report back that it's good stuff! It says natural and organic on the bag, so that's nice. I could use it for herbs and tomatoes and feel good knowing I won't be ingesting any chemicals.

Better Potting Soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love using Back to the Roots Potting Mix for my indoor and outdoor pitted plants. Back to the Roots Organic Potting Mix is made in America, and blended with all purpose plant food and yucca extract. It can be used with herb , fruit, vegetable, and flower potted plants that grow indoors and out. The large size bag is perfect for my needs, since I have many potted plants, and am often working with them. I like to add fresh soil to the pots on a regular basis. This soil is dark, rich, not hard or clumpy, and drains well when watered. I do notice that it doesn't dry out fast, and stays moist longer, so I water less frequently. I am pleased that it's organic and all natural, because I plan to use it for my young vegetable and herb garden seedlings My herbs are benefitting from this soil currently, and they look green and healthy, even with my moving them from the freeze. My plants enjoy Back to the Roots Organic Potting Mix, and I recommend it!

First time using the all purpose potting mix for my indoor plants and I really like it. The soil is all natural and seems like it’s a great mix of all the nutrients the plants need. Very fertile, my new plants sprouted very fast and the old plants seem to thrive as well!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love my indoor plants and want to give them the best. I saw this brand for first time and took an interest. I really like it and I think my plants do too. I also add extras to any soil I use like perlite and coco coir. I like that this is organic and not pretreated with gmo’s/chemicals (as the leading brand sold in big box stores put on theirs.)
