Q: What is NPK of the Sta Green Potting Mix?

submitted by Linda - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Linda! While we can't provide the exact NPK (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) values for Sta-Green's Potting Mix, Back to the Roots Organic Raised Bed Soil has an NPK of 0.18-0.04-0.04. These numbers may seem low at first glance, but they're typical for organic fertilizers. Organic options are designed to be gentler, releasing nutrients slowly over time to support long-term plant health and reduce the risk of overfeeding. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com — we're always happy to help!

Q: What are the ingredients of this soil?

submitted by Lauren K - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Lauren! Our soils are made from processed forest products, coir, limestone, fertilizer, mycorrhizae, and moisture-balancing yucca. Depending on the soil bag, the organic fertilizers could have ingredients derived from milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, or soy. Please read through each soil bag's exact ingredients in case you have any allergies to any of these ingredients. If very severe, we'd recommend being careful using our soils & talking to a doctor first. All of our bagged soil has poultry litter, feather meal, and sulfate of potash. Our Organic Raised Bed Mix also has Gypsum to improve soil health. Please feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with questions or concerns! We're here to help.

Q: Is it okay/normal for this to be full of little mushrooms? I'm using it in buckets indoors for tomatoes.

submitted by Justme - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Justme! Mushrooms are a sign your soil is biologically alive and healthy; you can pinch the tops off and throw them out, but it could signal that the growing conditions are too humid and moist. Please feel free to send photos to contact@backtotheroots.com, we would be happy to help you grow.

Q: I opened a bag today and it is almost all powder. The normal mix is the opposite of powder. Any ideas a)what happened, b)what it is and c)how to use it so it is safe to use for vegetable plants?

submitted by fhj52 - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi FHJ52! If you wouldn't mind sending a photo of your soil to contact@backtotheroots.com, we would be happy to have a look to see what's happening with your soil. If need be, we are happy to help with a refund or replacement.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really needed to get these plants re-potted into larger pots and this potting soil worked wonderfully. It really retains the moisture so I don’t need to water as often. We are setting up our raised garden beds today and planting some tomato plants we bought. Ours got a blight from all the rain. This bed mix will work beautifully!

plants died

I usually use a name brand, but this was on sale so I bought 6 bags. I put plants that I bought at a nursery in the pots - the same vegetable plants I get every year and that do very well in the other soil - ALL of the plants died within a couple weeks. Now I have to bag up soil to get it out of the garden so I can get vegetables to grow next year. This was a complete waste of money!

Hello! We’re so sorry to hear about your experience — we know how disappointing it is when your plants don’t thrive, especially after all the time and care you put in. That’s definitely not what we want for our growers. We’d love the opportunity to help troubleshoot and make this right. If you're open to it, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with a few photos of the soil and plants. It would also be super helpful if you could include details on how you were caring for them — like how often and what time of day they were watered, how much sunlight they were getting, and whether you used any fertilizer. Our team is here to support you and help get your garden back on track!

Horrible mix of 95% shredded hard wood, and sand. No soil, perlite, compost, hummus, peat moss, vermiculite or other beneficial inputs or components. Large chunks of wood the size of my hand were also prominent in the mix.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 12 days ago
Hello JcPlatt! Thank you for your feedback, and we’re really sorry to hear about your experience. Our soil is peat-free by design—we intentionally avoid using peat moss to help protect fragile peatland ecosystems. Instead, we focus on using renewable, organic materials that support healthy soil biology and sustainable gardening. That said, what you’re describing doesn’t sound right to us. We'd love to take a closer look—could you please send photos of the soil, along with clear shots of the front and back of the bag, to contact@backtotheroots.com? This will help our team investigate and make things right. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention—we’re here to help and appreciate you growing with us.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The packaging was a little disappointing- there were beetles and other bugs surrounding the soil, so we waited a few days before we opened completely. Besides that, we used this soil to grow berries for the summer, and will happily update as the continue to grow! Also added soil to my propagated monstera, which is taking it well so far.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have received this product, complementary in exchange for my honest review. This soil is going to be used specifically for my raised bed, I will be planting herbs and veggies. The blend of the soil is not completely filled with fillers such as wood pieces. I did have the bag sitting for some time, I wasn’t able to use it right away because of the weather, when I opened it there was no of mold, which means great packaging! Not to mention this soil is Organic!! I’m excited to use this soil and see how it pairs with my veggies. I would definitely recommend this soil for fellow gardeners!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently tried the Back To The Roots "Better" Raised Bed Mix, and I’m really impressed with the quality! The soil is rich, well-aerated, and retains moisture beautifully, making it perfect for my raised garden beds. My plants responded well to it, showing strong, healthy growth within just a few weeks. I also appreciate that it's organic and peat-free, making it an eco-friendly choice. Unlike some other mixes, it doesn’t dry out too quickly, and there were no signs of pests or unwanted debris.
