Q: Is this Vegan (no animal by-products, no manure, no slaughter house products)?

submitted by flvegan - 25 days ago
  • A: Hi there, thank you for your question! Our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is not considered vegan. While it’s made primarily from natural plant-based and mineral ingredients, it does contain poultry litter and feather meal, which are animal by-products. These ingredients are commonly used in organic fertilizers as natural sources of nutrients but would not meet vegan standards.

Q: Would you please list the full ingredients here? And if they don't specify, if chicken manure, crab meal, or any other animal products are used, please list specifically which ones here, thank you.

  • A: Hi there! Thanks so much for your question! Our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is crafted with natural and organic ingredients, and we’d be happy to provide you with the full list so you can feel confident about what’s going into your plants. Please feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com, and our team will gladly send over the detailed ingredients list for any of our soils, including whether they contain animal-based products like chicken manure or crab meal. Q: Is this a good mix for orchids?

submitted by Olay - 4 months ago
  • A: Hi there! Thanks for your question. This mix isn’t ideal for orchids. While the Back to the Roots Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is great for plants that need fast drainage, like succulents and cacti, orchids have different needs. They grow best in a loose, chunky medium—such as bark or sphagnum moss—that allows plenty of airflow around their roots. This cactus mix is likely too dense for orchids and may hold too much moisture, which can lead to root rot. For best results, we recommend using a potting mix specifically formulated for orchids. If you'd like help choosing the right soil, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com—we’re happy to help!

Gnats

When I opened the bag, so many gnats flew out. I had already dumped my old planter so I was kind of in a bind and just used it-thinking I would be able to get rid of the gnats. No way! Just had to dump the soil and start again. I have never opened a new bag of soil and found it infested with gnats. Such a disappointment.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience, and we’re so sorry for the disappointment! Fungus gnats are a natural part of gardening and can appear in any potting mix, since they’re attracted to organic materials and moisture. While we take steps to prevent this, it can occasionally happen. We’d love the chance to help. If you could email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the front and back of your soil bag, our team will be happy to share some tips for getting rid of gnats and send you a replacement as needed. We truly appreciate you giving our soil a try and want to make sure you’re supported on your gardening journey! 🌱

Avoid! Plant Killer

Purchased this soil for a new planter in which to transfer my succulents to. They all died. Noticed there were gnats all around the planter. Seems like the great reviews are coming from those who were gifted this dirt. Stay away from this brand- I had to return the another type of soil from this same brand.

Hi Albert G! We’re really sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you sharing this feedback. That’s definitely not the outcome we want for your plants. Fungus gnats are unfortunately a common issue that can arise with any potting soil, especially when moisture levels are high. They’re naturally attracted to damp, organic-rich environments and can also come from nearby plants or surroundings. That said, we take all concerns seriously and want to make sure nothing slipped through on our end. To help us better understand what happened and make things right, could you please email us the following details at contact@backtotheroots.com? Photos of the bugs you saw Pictures of the front and back of the soil bag A bit about your plant care routine (especially watering) Whether you noticed the gnats before or after using the soil Your feedback helps us continually improve, and we’d love the opportunity to learn more and support you directly. Warm regards, The Back to the Roots Team

Excited to Monitor the Growth! 🌵🌵

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve never had a green thumb, but I’m excited to see the results of this adventure! 🌵🌵 The bag is a generous size, doesn’t have an odor and is packaged well. Now just to be patient while the plants grow. 🌱🌱

Mine had bugs UGH

I ordered a big pot and this bag of potting soil and when I opened the box, there were gnats inside the plastic pot. Then I read the other reviews so I sealed this potting soil in a plastic bag and I’m returning it tomorrow. I’m trying to get rid of gnats not get more!

Hi Will! We’re really sorry to hear about your experience — that’s definitely not what we want for any of our customers. We take concerns like this seriously and would love the chance to look into it further. If you're open to it, could you please send us clear photos of the front and back of the soil bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? Once we receive those, we’ll be happy to investigate and help with a replacement if needed. Thanks again for your feedback, and we hope to make this right!

Do not buy!

When I first got the bag it seemed fine (didn’t really pay attention). I replanted my succulents with this soil and not even a week later all of the succulents we had started having fungus gnats. I went to go check the bag to see if I had enough soil left to replant again, opened it up and there the fungus gnats were. There were so many gnats that I had to replant them in orchid soil until I was sure that it wasn’t from something else in the house. Some of them broke off which was so disappointing since I’ve been growing them for so long

Hi there! Thank you for your feedback, and we’re so sorry to hear about your experience. We completely understand how frustrating it is to see your plants impacted—especially ones you’ve cared for so long. Fungus gnats are a common issue many indoor gardeners face, and they’re often drawn to moist, organic-rich soil environments. While they can sometimes appear from the soil itself, they can also be introduced from the surrounding environment or other houseplants. These tiny insects lay their eggs in damp soil, and the larvae feed on organic material—especially in warm, humid conditions. That said, we take quality and your experience very seriously. To help us investigate this further, could you please send clear photos of the front and back of the soil bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? This will help our team trace the batch and look into it closely. Again, we’re so sorry for the inconvenience, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We're here to make it right and support you on your growing journey.

Buyer Beware

The bag of soil came with bugs, little tiny bugs and some of them flew around once I opened the bag. I don’t know the reason for why the soil has these bugs in it. I don’t know if it’s because of where it was housed (possibly Target warehouse), or if the soil wasn’t cleaned, etc. I do NOT recommend buying this soil.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience — we’re so sorry to hear that you found bugs in your soil. That’s definitely not what we want for any of our growers, and we understand how off-putting that can be. Because our potting mix is 100% organic and free from synthetic chemicals, it can occasionally attract naturally occurring insects, especially if it's been stored in warm or humid conditions (like in a warehouse or garage). While they’re usually harmless to plants, we take every report seriously. To help us look into this further, could you please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the front and back of the soil bag(s), including any lot numbers or expiration dates? We’d love to investigate and make this right for you. Thanks again for your feedback — we’re here to help!

My pkants love it.

Great blend of sand and dirt. I add my own cocunut noir for water retention. It has no peat moss. Very light and not heavy like soil. I mix it with some soil from same brand.

Don't buy

My succulents were thriving for years until I used this soil. It was mostly made of stick pieces and had fungus gnats
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 6 months ago
Hi Ginny! We're really sorry to hear about your experience — that’s definitely not what we want for your succulents. Our soil blend includes larger wood pieces to support aeration and drainage, which are especially important for cacti and succulents, but we understand this may not have worked well in your case. We'd love to learn more and help make things right — please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with some photos and details so our team can assist you directly.

Good Succulent/cactus soil mix

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Decent succulent and cactus mix soil. Smells like soil - not too strong but it’s soil. Had a cactus die, so a pot was empty. Bought a new cactus and repotted it with this about a month ago. It’s still alive and vibrant in color. Still seems to dry out kinda quickly on the top and it takes a while for the water to soak through and down. So far happy with it.

Great mix

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a large and extensive succulent garden and one of my favorite gifts to give are cuttings of my plants. I go through soil frequently but this is my favorite brand. I love how the succulent mix doesn’t hold too much water that leads to root rot.

Amazing Results! Won’t be without.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using Back To The Roots succulent mix on my Cactus for awhile now. I was thrilled when Influenster sent me a bag because I was almost out of the current bag. As you can see, I have 3 types of cactus: Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. I give Back To The Roots credit for how well my trio is thriving. All 3 cactus have blooms on them right now and bloom 2-3 times per year. I have also seen obvious growth on the 3 cactus since using this mix. I add this succulent mix to the top of my cactus whenever I feel that more soil is needed. Thank you Influenster and Back To The Roots for this opportunity!

killed all of my plants

i normally use fox farm brand. tried this for aloe because it is a succulent. died. i thought i did something wrong. used the soil for spider plant (which is really hard to kill) and within a week it is dying. i’ve potted dozens of spider plant and never had this happen. will never use this soil again
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 year ago
Hi There! We are sorry to hear you're having trouble with our soil. While spider plants do not mind a cacti & succulent soil, it is not an ideal choice since spider plants prefer a slightly more moisture-retentive soil, and a cactus mix can dry out too quickly, potentially requiring more frequent watering. Please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com, we would love to help you grow with our soil.
