Description

IT ALL STARTS WITH GREAT SOIL!

We created an amazing soil blend specifically designed for potting needs because we realized how crucial the proper ratios, drainage, and nutrient factors are. That's why this soil includes natural, organic, and nutritious fertilizer as well as moisture retaining coconut coir, and beneficial mycorrhizae for enhanced root growth. We're also proudly Peat-Free! Why? Because peat stores 30% of the world's soil carbon and mining peatlands to add to soil contributes to extremely excessive C02 emissions around the world every year. We think the peat should stay where it is!

KILLING MY PLANTS!

1 out of 5 stars
Would not recommend
kconnors - 11 days ago, Verified purchaser
Wanted to try this “well reviewed” soil and what I get is basically a bag of mulch. I was expecting the usual fluffy soil, but what was in the bag was wood chips, sticks and dust. Dries out so quickly I’m having to water my large plants every 3-4 day. So bad in fact that I’m having to buy new soil and replant them AGAIN as their leaves are getting crispy spots. I realized now that ALL of the reviews say they were collected as part of a promotion. Straight up lying!

Hi Kconnors! We understand your concern, and we're here to help and support your gardening journey. At Back to the Roots, we are committed to creating organic gardening products that are great for our plants AND planet. Instead of internationally sourced peat in our soil mixes (that many are linking to widespread carbon emissions), we are using all local, regional, upcycled organic matter — a 100% USA Made & Blended Soil brand. Much of our local material is upcycled bark fines from pre-consumer waste streams that would otherwise be incinerated for energy, land-filled, or otherwise disposed of. Most of the potting soils and soil amendments found in retail stores have nearly 60% peat moss. Those products will have a finer texture and feel spongier to the touch. Our soils may look and feel different depending on regionally sourced inputs. However, each bag of soil is 100% guaranteed to grow the garden of your dreams and the regional aged wood & bark fines help improve airspace/moisture retention and help break up difficult clay soils. The finer, more decomposed particles hold a tremendous amount of water and improve fine soil texture by forming colloids (clumps) which helps improve moisture and air infiltration. Larger particles also help wedge the soil apart and keep it from compacting over time. Lastly, as wood and bark fines age (decompose) in big moisture and temperature-controlled piles, they accumulate huge populations (millions to tens of billions per gram) of beneficial microbes. These microbes consume the carbon and minerals in the wood and as your garden grows, they transform it into nutrients for your plants. We really appreciate you growing with us, and are excited for you to grow your plants in our soils. However, we also understand that texture is important, and if you are not satisfied, please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with your original proof of purchase and we'd be happy to help with a refund.

Fungus gnats galore

2 out of 5 stars
Would not recommend
Rae414 - 15 days ago, Verified purchaser
I ordered this hoping to avoid fungus gnats as I had read repeatedly that another brand was notorious for them. I haven't even opened the bags yet and I feel like I am being invaded by gnats. I have been very confused in trying to figure out which plant(s) were proliferating them. I was just reading reviews for this soil on a different platform and saw mention of gnats. I walked over to the 2 bags I have sitting here - and aha! - gnats everywhere. I have now thrown them out into the cold and snow. But unfortunately I now have to begin to attack the ones already living in my plants. Hopefully I can get them under control within a couple of weeks.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 15 days ago
Hi Rae414! The most common cause of Fungus Gnats in potted plants is overwatering/soil that is too moist consistently. You can use mosquito bits or dunks to help with Fungus Gnats, or shallow dishes with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, dish soap, and water near (but not in) your plants to catch them. I'd use the mosquito bits or dunks, as that will kill the larvae which will do more harm than the adult gnats. We really appreciate you growing with us, and are excited for you to grow your plants in our soils. However, we also understand your concern, please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com; we're here to support you.

Great Soil but Dries Quickly

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My mom has a true green thumb, and she is very particular about her plant soil. The Back to the Roots soil does not retain moisture well and dries out quickly; however, her plants are thriving because she waters them frequently-- that's a necessity with this brand. She hasn't seen flying insects around the plants that come from some soil, and that's a great thing! She would definitely buy this potting soil again.

Full of Gnats

Megha - 2 months ago, Verified purchaser
I bought this on a whim one day because they were out of the soil I usually buy and have had a horrible gnat problem ever since. I know it was this product because I’ve never had gnats in my home before, the biggest concentration is in the plants where I used this soil, and other people have mentioned a similar issue with this brand

Serious problems with this soil; all the herbs I planted in it have died (houseplants going strong) but soil gets very moldy and attracts fruit flies even with adequate drainage.

This soil and bag size is perfect to walk around the house and add a little extra here and there. My daughter has a pumpkin growing in a plastic cup so that’s my next project to replant it in this soil.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I live in an apartment and don't have any outdoor space. I do however LOVE my house plants and my succulents that stay on my balcony year round (Southern California). I don't have a need for the huge bags of potting soil that big box stores sell. Back to the Roots - "Best" Potting Mix - 6 quart is the perfect size and the mix is amazing. My plants look so much healthier! This mix is so much better than the usual potting mix. Absolutely love it.

Sand and spider mites

This soil has a TON of sand in it. I didn’t realize at first but it’s a lot. So much sand that when I bottom watered my plants there was sand left in the tray. I noticed spider mites almost immediately. I topped off all of my plants with this soil and have about 50 plants with spider mites and sand now.
