If you used a liquid fabric softener, the residue may be caused by the detergent combined with the fabric softener. (This can occur with either powder or liquid detergent.) In this case, wipe the residue with a damp cloth. Make sure to add fabric softener to the final rinse cycle, not the wash cycle.
