Q: Is it possible to skip the middle shelf? I would like to put my microwave on the top and my trashcan underneath 
A: You can fold the middle shelf up, but would not recommend it, as doing so will lessen the overall sturdiness of the unit. Plus, the shelf has no safe or secure way to remain in up position.

Q: can i extend the number of shelves in this one by adding another unit?
A: Hi, basing my answer on the 3 units I have. There isn't a way to stack them vertically and unlike some other metal shelves, the supports don't disconnect from each other to add more shelves.
