I set up my Forerunner 970 to display six parameters while running. The automated voice reads out these parameters at each mile. GPS appears consistently accurate.

The new Forerunner 970 is a great watch. It bridges the gap between the 965 and the Fēnix very well. It has most all of the features of the Fēnix except for suba diving. I decided to go with the 970 for the lighter weight and to save some money! While I won’t use most of the advanced running features, I got this watch for better tracking of backcountry skiing, mountaineering, hiking, and some biking. Also the flashlight is incredible! The new data insights are fantastic and I love the function overall. My only con so far is I do not like the watch face that is default. It would be lovely to see new ones added for the 970. To solve that I am using a Fēnix style face from the connect IQ app. Overall, highly recommend if you are looking to track outdoor activities!

Loving it. Best display-brightness, sharpness, colors and beautiful user interface. Love the sapphire crystal. I imagine the Fenix 8 is comparable but prefer this form factor for running and daily wear. Lot of battery comments online but no problem for me. Have received compliments from others.

Best triathlon watch on the market 2025

Have used it for 2 months, and I enjoy every new features of this watch paired with my hrm600. The running performance and economy is a game changer that I can analyze how do I improve my running form to become more energy efficient and avoid injury based on the stats. Also I love doing night run during hot summer so the flashlight is so useful and doesn’t drain the battery too much.

added actual flashlight, ECG, and a few new metrics that only a few athletes will use. If you have a 965, might not need to move up but any other Forerunner user would benefit from the upgrade.

970 just ok so far

As someone who’s highly passionate about performance metrics and actively uses Garmin data to enhance my training, I’m sharing this review from the perspective of a dedicated—yet recreational—runner. I’m not competing for podiums, but I value precision and continuous improvement in everything I do. My previous watch was the Garmin 945, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a phenomenal device that consistently delivered a focused, performance-first experience. After six weeks of using the Garmin 970—with weekly totals of 10–14 hours split between 5–7 hours of running, 2–3 hours of biking, 2–3 hours of strength training, and 1 hour of swimming—here’s my experience: Pros • Beautiful Screen: The high-definition, ultra-bright display is especially appreciated during swims. It's one of the standout features. • Customizable Watch Faces: The preloaded faces are visually appealing and easy to tailor to specific training metrics. • Running Power Metric: Still working with my coach to unlock its full potential, but it appears to be a promising addition. Cons • Loss of Temperature Metric: Unlike the 945, Garmin Connect no longer displays ambient temperature, which I found helpful. • Disruptive Notifications: Despite disabling smart notifications, I still occasionally receive texts and app alerts. It is not clear to my why this watch does not offer a seamless connectivity like the 945 where you can shutdown the door to anything not workout related. • Over-Reliance on Smartphone: During a long run, I completed 8 solo miles while listening to music on my phone. After leaving my phone in the car to run 5 more miles with friends, the watch disconnected, displayed “Looking for the phone,” and failed to track the rest of the workout. Once reconnected, it didn’t backfill the missing data. This never happened with the 945, the watch is fully independent and just sync at the end of each workout. My Current Routine I now use both watches. The 970 serves as my daily wear and handles certain workouts, while I still use the Garmin 945 sometimes to target high-focus training — thanks to its independence to the smartphone. If I had to choose between the two at equal pricing, I’d still go with the Garmin 945. It offers a seamless experience that’s laser-focused on performance and better suited to my training style. Final Thought I truly hope Garmin delivers firmware updates that reduce the 970’s dependency on smartphones and restore the kind of streamlined workout experience that made the 945 such an exceptional tool.

Good watch, lots of metrics, but occassionaly bugg

Overall, I would call it a good watch. I wouldn't call it a great watch. The screen is great. The metrics are great. However, I run into the occassional bug. The screen will weirdly lock inside one metric or another and I cannot get out of it. I want to start a run and the watch screen will black out. I find this weird, because this has not been a problem with any of the watches I have used in the past. Overall, I would still call it a good watch, but cannot call it great.

I recently upgraded to this from the Forerunner 255s and am so happy that I did. I really loved my previous Forerunner but was searching for a few new features, metrics, and greater precision--all of which, this has delivered on. As an avid runner, I was debating between this watch and a couple of other Garmin models, but this happens to be a great medium that has all of the features that I was searching for.

Change over from Apple Watch

I got this a month ago when I realized my battery degradation on my Apple Watch wouldn’t last me a marathon. So it was either replace it with an Ultra or a Garmin. So far like everyone says it’s a great exercise tracker. I didn’t use a lot of smart watch features so don’t really miss them. There is a little bit of a learning curve. Been a few times my exercises ran over because I didn’t end them right or I didn’t click a button. The apple detecting when you aren’t moving needs to be incorporated into this. Overall I’m glad I made the change an am enjoying the Garmin run coach, not to mention charging once every five or six days!

It has so many features it's a bit of a learning curve, but once you do it's fantastic. I love that it has options for recording triathalons and brick workouts. It auto detects swimming time and rest time when lap swimming. Recovery time after each workout to guide your fitness.

I’ve owned the 970 for a couple of weeks and, so far, I’m impressed. The screen is very readable even under the brightest sunlight. The sensors are much improved over the prior generation. And battery life is as good as advertised. It also looks great!

Great watch. Great for workout, running, hiking, and all the other health features, and health tracking. Lacks some of the smartwatch features that come with the Apple Watch. I love the sleep tracking and other features that track overall health and energy levels. I would highly recommend.

Just a little too big but I love all of the features. Also love how comfortable is was and lightweight. Hoping Garmin offers this premium forerunner in a 43mm case soon. I have the Fenix 6s now but it feels a little heavy but I need the durability for work since I'm always banging the case on things.

I recently switched from an Apple Watch to the Garmin Forerunner 970, and after a few weeks of using it, I’ll never look back. It’s definitely a shift if you’re used to Apple, but the level of detail and insight this watch provides—especially for training—is next level. It tracks everything so accurately, from runs to hikes to gym sessions, biking, and even sleep. Despite being packed with tech, it’s super lightweight and comfortable—I even forget I’m wearing it overnight. The flashlight feature is a surprisingly handy bonus, and I use it way more than I expected. The only downside is that the battery seems to drain a bit faster than some other Garmin models (so I’ve been told), but considering all the features packed into this watch, it makes sense. If you’re serious about running or just lead an active lifestyle, I highly recommend the Forerunner 970. It’s a powerhouse!!
