    Minimal cooling maximum leakage

This AC continues to leak. It’s extremely noisy and most of all it doesn’t cool properly. I purchased three portable AC units this summer. The GE was put in the smaller of the three rooms and does not keep it half as cool as the two Midea 6000 BTU I picked up from BJs.

We’d like to assist with the issues you’re having with the cooling performance, leaking, and the sound level. We recommend ensuring the air filter is clean, and airflow around the unit is not restricted. More troubleshooting regarding a cooling issue is available on page 13 of your manual. The manual can be viewed on our GE Appliances website when you look up the model number, go to the product’s page, and view the ‘Owner Support’ section. Regarding a leak, we can advise the air conditioner is designed to automatically evaporate condensation in most conditions. We recommend ensuring there’s no issue with the hose and it’s attached properly; an issue with the hose could lead to the unit operating inefficiently and moisture building up. We also suggest ensuring the air conditioner is on a flat, level surface, so water isn’t distributing unevenly inside the unit. Ensuring it’s level may help with the sound as well. Your manual includes installation instructions starting on page 9; we recommend ensuring there’s no damage and the air conditioner is installed according to those instructions, as an issue with installation could cause the issues you mention. Regarding the sound level, we can advise model APHS05BWF is designed to operate in a range of 48 dBA to 53 dBA – this is about the same sound level as rainfall. We also suggest disconnecting the unit from power for a couple of minutes before reconnecting, to reset it. If you still need assistance after troubleshooting, please contact our warranty team directly at 1-833-4BODEWELL. Information about your warranty is available on page 15 of the manual.

    Leaking Problem

This unit was working fine in a very small bedroom for a few days, and then it started to leak. This coincided with an FC warning on the unit. I don't know why it started to leak when the reservoir was full instead of just shutting off. The unit is on a flat surface, and the plugs were installed securely. Perhaps a fault water level sensor? I have other portable ACs of similar size in rooms of similar size, running for longer (per day and number of days), and they have not leaked, nor have their reservoirs been full at any time. I ended up connecting the continuous drain plug to a hose emptying in a gallon jug. Let's hope this solves the problem until I can get some clarification of whether or not this is a malfunction, or just how it is. If its the latter, then I will get rid of it and get another of the other brand's small AC unit that I have. On another note regarding the water tank and drains... GE's documentation is TERRIBLE!!! The drains, which apparently play a very important part of this unit's operation, hardly get a mention in the user manual, or any other documentation. It's little more than "There are 2 drain plugs". As best I can tell, the bottom one is used for draining the tank when it's full. And the upper one is for dehumidifying. So we're left with questions like... is one a constant drain? Are they both gravity drains? Is one pumped? Will they both work in all modes? Or when I switch from cool to dry, do I have to remove and reroute the hose? Because that's what it seems to be saying. Which is just unacceptable in this day and age. When a unit has functions that you can switch via remote control from across the room, you shouldn't also have to get up, walk across the room, and move a hose. Unacceptable. So, base don my experience with this unit, compared to 4 other similar ones I bought at the same time from a company that specializes in cold air, I can not recommend anyone get this unit, unless at the very least, GE includes some supplemental information about the drains, how they work, when they are used, and what they are capable of doing. If this unit has so small of a water tank that it overflows under normal operations after a few days with not a lot of humidity, then the drains need to have a lot more attention in the manuals, so people's homes don't get damaged.
    1 reply from GE_Appliances team - 5 days ago
We want to provide information regarding the drainage system on your portable air conditioner. Regarding the FC code, we recommend resetting the unit and ensuring it is clean and properly installed. The unit does not have a pump, and the drains operate by gravity. In Cool mode, a hose does not need to be connected to the upper drain port, as excess moisture is normally collected in the lower drain area and automatically evaporated. In Dry mode, a hose can be connected to the upper drain port to allow for continuous gravity drainage. The lower drain is used when the internal tank is full, indicated by the FL code. Additional information can be found in this article: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=38607. We also recommend reviewing page 5 of the manual for more information about drainage and what to expect when using Cool and Dry modes: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--Qbn6Hsb_--/544ef4d9aa18cd3e1aa0a214159ed44ed1b34f76.pdf.

    GE Portable Air Conditioner

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this GE Portable Air Conditioner was able to cool a room. The price was affordable too! I would recommend this to anyone who finds themself without AC on a hot day. It was on the heavy side for one person to carry, so ladies keep this in mind if you pick one up by yourself.

You should only buy a Two Hose type of this machine. A one hose exhaust type like this one will cool just the area in front of the unit. The negative air pressure creates by pushing hot air out of the one exhaust pipe cools a very small area a lot while pulling hot air in from the attic down through the light fixtures and walls. It heats everywhere else to replace the hot air the air conditioner pushes outside. If you are prepared to buy additional HVAC materials to modify the machine intake you might line the results. People have uploaded videos to show custom intake cover/pipe inlet that vents fresh air from some source other than the room. That makes the inlet and outlet alike and "supposedly" eliminated the negative pressure problems for some lucky users. It's better to get delivered a Two Hose unit, since stores aren't putting enough on the shelf. Thomas Edison would be disgusted at this waste of electricity that bears the logo of his legacy right on the front. These things are discarded often here in the southeast.

We want to provide information about this portable air conditioner. The 6000 BTU unit is designed to cool spaces approximately 150-250 sq ft in size. For optimal performance, the unit needs to be used within the recommended room size and installed according to the instructions provided with the product. We do not recommend altering, redesigning, or modifying an appliance part or accessory. Our products are designed, tested, and manufactured to specific specifications, and modifications can affect product performance and can void the warranty. If you ever need assistance with your appliance, we're happy to help.

    Vanishing items

Soooo frustrated! My mother is 81 yrs old and her AC went out, so I was desperately trying to find something that day. I ordered a portable AC unit from a target location that online, showed one in stock. I got there, after 45 minutes, they couldn't find it. they sent me to a second location which showed 2 in stock. They couldn't find a unit. I told them, I don't want to have it delivered. I don't want to deal with them anymore. What kind of system shows in stock, has me driving from location to location and still not receive the item. Are they being stolen by employees? What's going on here? Same thing yesterday showed 1 microwave I wanted in stock. They couldn't find it & wanted to send me to another store. NO WAY!! I won't shop there anymore! I would have put a rating of zero stars but that wasn't an option!!

    Always shows FL code

First night we woke to FL code. So drained it in the morning. Next night, FL code was less than 1 hour using it. So we attached the drain tube to it, put it in a very large mixing bowl and woke to tons of water on the floor. So now we have it in a 5 gal bucket and have to empty it every day. My son has a different brand portable AC in his room and we’ve not had to drain it at all this summer! Very disappointed!!
    1 reply from GE_Appliances team - 24 days ago
Your portable air conditioner removes heat and humidity from the room. Under certain conditions like extreme humidity or trying to cool multiple rooms, the air conditioner may not be able to evaporate all of the water it is removing. Make sure that the doors and windows in the room you are cooling are closed. If you drain the water from the base of the unit, following the instructions in the Use & Care Manual on page 8 at the link below, you can turn the unit back on and it will resume operation. https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--Qbn6Hsb_--/544ef4d9aa18cd3e1aa0a214159ed44ed1b34f76.pdf

    Irritated

Air conditioner will turn off when tank is full. I have to empty the tank 3 times a day.
1 reply from GE Answers team - 26 days ago
We'd like to provide some information on your portable air conditioner's water collection and storage tank. As a portable air conditioner runs, it draws moisture from the air. This moisture condenses into water that is collected in the storage tank. Typically you will not need to empty the storage tank, except if there is excessive water. This will occur when using Dry (Dehumidification) mode or when you first connect the air conditioner. A garden hose can be connected for a continuous drain if needed. You can find information on draining your unit on the article titled "Portable Air Conditioner - Storage Tank Drain Connection" on our GE Appliances website. You can view this article on our website when you put the name of the article in the search bar and then click on the “Support” tab.

It errors out a lot due to water (FL error), and you need a literal bucket next to it for the water to come out.

Your portable air conditioner removes heat and humidity from the room. Under certain conditions like extreme humidity or trying to cool multiple rooms, the unit may not be able to evaporate all of the water it is removing. Make sure that the doors and windows in the room you are cooling are closed. The "FL" code means that the unit has filled with water. It will not start working again until it has been emptied.

Works ok. Had to put it on top of a bin with it draining into a different bin due to excessive water build up and it shutting off after 30 minutes. Blows cold, cools a room, but definitely could collect water in a more efficient way. Possibly a broken coils or something to pull the water up to steam but it wasn’t steaming and definitely not properly draining correctly.
1 reply from GE Answers team - 1 month ago
During the normal air conditioning process, moisture or humidity is removed from the space. How much moisture collects depends on the humidity level in the room you're cooling. The Water Full indicator (“FL” on the control panel display) illuminates when the internal water tank has filled with condensed water. This is normal. We recommend checking to be sure windows and doors in the space to be cooled are shut tight to avoid introducing additional heat and humidity.

    Pass on this

Leaks water everywhere and hose provided does not fit the unit, it’s way too small. If you don’t use the drain you will be emptying out the unit every 5 minutes. Do not purchase
1 reply from GE Answers team - 1 month ago
We are happy to provide guidance with this air conditioner. As long as the unit is installed and leveled properly, this unit will not drip inside the home. If the unit is leaking, check the exhaust vent and whether the unit is level. Ensure the exhaust hose couplings are inserted properly. Any air leakage inside the room can lead to inefficient operation and moisture build up. If installed properly, it will be able to withstand rain blowing into the exhaust vent opening. Make sure the hose has at least some portion of its length on the floor below the output of the unit. You will also need to ensure the unit is on a flat, level surface. If you have checked the thing above, and you're still experiencing leaking, please contact our warranty team directly at 1-833-4BODEWELL.

Dont buy, poor performance and loud

It did not cool the room at all. I live in a small apt on the second story so its understandably hotter but it could not cool my bedroom. The only area it would cool was directly in front of it. Its also pretty loud even on quiet mode. Installation was easy but im returning due to poor performance and noise. For almost $300 I was expecting at least some cooling.
1 reply from GE Answers team - 1 month ago
We'd like to share information about the cooling performance you are noticing. We first recommend checking that your unit is properly sized for your room. An oversized air conditioner results in the compressor running for short periods of time and being off for long periods of time. You can view more information by checking our article titled "Air Conditioner - Sizing Guidelines" on our GE Appliances website. We also suggest checking the installation around the windowsill, to make sure it is stable and that no gaps are present. This can also reduce any rattling sounds caused from excessive vibrations. We understand that you are planning to return the product. We always recommend reaching out to us directly for product assistance so that we can work with you toward a resolution before a return is necessary; we’re always here to help.

We are sorry that this air conditioner has not lived up to your expectations due to the draining. We recommend connecting this appliance to a floor drain for more efficient draining externally. You can connect a ½” outer diameter flexible drain hose (not included) to the upper drain port and drain to a floor drain.

We are happy to provide guidance with this air conditioner. The sound level of portable air conditioners varies depending on fan speed. They are approximately 59 dBa (decibels) at the maximum fan speed setting. By way of comparison, 60 dBa is the sound level of normal conversation measured 3 feet away; the average ambient noise level in a home is 50 dBa. A vacuum cleaner produces 70 dB measured 3 feet away. It is normal for this appliance to need frequent draining if Dry Mode is used frequently or this appliance is installed in a higher temperature area.
