About this item

Highlights

  • Get alerts on your phone. Nest Protect sends you a message when there’s a problem or the batteries run low.
  • Every second counts. The Split-Spectrum Sensor looks for both fast and slow burning fires.
  • Tells you what and where. Nest Protect speaks up if there’s smoke or CO and tells you where it is, so you know what to do.
  • Hush from the Nest app. Just burned the popcorn? Quiet the false alarm with your phone, not your dish towel.
  • Sees the CO you can’t. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, poisonous gas. Nest Protect tells you where it’s hiding.
  • 10-year life span. Nest Protect’s long-lasting sensors keep you safe and sound for up to a decade.
  • A light in the dark. Usually Nest Protect has its light turned off, but when you walk underneath it, Pathlight can light your way.

Description

Meet Nest Protect.
There’s never been a smoke and CO alarm quite like this. Nest Protect looks for fast-burning fires, smoldering fires, and carbon monoxide.
It also speaks up when there’s a problem, can be hushed from your phone, and it will even message your phone in case you’re not home.

Q: Do you need one per room?

submitted by awinkler - 7 years ago
  • A: We use a combination of basic (Kidde) smoke detectors in rooms, along with Nest Protects in central areas. We have one Nest Protect outside the bedrooms, one near the kitchen, and another near our furnace mainly so that we're covered from a carbon monoxide standpoint as well.

submitted byVin - 7 years ago
  • A: It depends on your home and room layout and the fire code where you live. Generally, they are placed in bedrooms and near a kitchen plus in other enclosed rooms or areas. I have a condo and the living room and kitchen areas are open so only one is needed based on code where I live plus in each bedroom. That could vary based on your city or state - Google fire code for smoke detectors where you like and it should tell you the requirements.

Q: Can I use a Nest Protect in my house if I don't have any other Nest items?

submitted by mkm - 8 years ago
  • A: The answer to the above question is YES. I found that I grew to like the first detector I installed, so now, I have multiple ones covering each floor and have installed a thermostat as well.

submitted byGeorge - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes. I have a nest protect and it is my only nest product. You can only link to your home network via an app on your phone so keep that in mind.

Q: does the Nest Protect require a subscription service like the nest cam's?

submitted by moonchild - 6 years ago
  • A: There is no subscription required or offered for the Nest Protect.

Q: Does your home have to have wifi to work? Also, why does the box say 'wired' but then it says it does not have to be wired? Confused about this product.

submitted by Ceci - 7 years ago
  • A: If you don't have WiFi, you would miss out on many key features in the Nest Protect including alerts or controlling the Nest on your cell phone(s), updates, and more. If you don't have WiFi, purchasing another brand of detector without those capabilities would be less expensive. "Wired" in the example on the box doesn't have anything to do with internet network connectivity (WiFi), it is the electrical connection. There are two options: Wired, which connected to the home's electrical wiring (if that spot is hard wired for the detector) or Battery, which has a replaceable battery and does not required a wired electrical connection.

Good product, Poor support

3 out of 5 stars
AlexK - 2 years ago
We have several of these units in our home and are generally very happy with them. The night light feature is unexpectedly very helpful. We look forward to Matter support coming to this family of products, whiuch would make them much more attractive. HOWEVER: Google needs to provide better support and access to spare parts. There are three items that are easily worn out or damaged, especially if you move a unit for any reason and it needs to be possible to get replacements from the Google store. Please make these available ASAP. 1. The mounting bracket. 2. The electrical connector (for wired units). 3. The batteries. It is very frustrating to have a DIY installable device without some assurance of part availability.

The Nest Protect was incredibly easy to set up. Once paired to the Nest app, it was a breeze to install, and even fitted the old screw mount for the knackered alarm it replaced. The reassuring green glow as I go to bed lets me know that the alarm is functioning. And, should I need extra surety, checking in on the automatic alarm tests couldn't be easier. We couldn't be happier with the Nest Protect and how little effort it took to gain peace of mind.

Easy to install, self testing, covers smoke and carbon monoxide in one. Easy to silence when you burn the toast! The night light illumination is a really useful little additional touch. No other smoke alarm comes close - 100% recommended.

So Far, So Good!

So yeah, set up and installation was easy. It hasn't actually been alerting us of an actual fire (thank goodness), but the testing worked well. The "light' they say illuminates the room when you walk in is underwhelming (as in not really), but yeah, you won't be tripping over anything in the room, because you can at least see what is around (kinda).

Hi Caffy, thanks for sharing the details of your feedback about the Nest Protect. We’re sorry to hear that you came across this Pathlight feature issue. We have tested Nest Protect's light brightness range to ensure the best performance while preserving battery life. The default setting is bright enough to light your way in the dark without draining the batteries quickly. Changing the brightness will affect its battery life. Nest Protect’s long-life LEDs have been rated to exceed the product lifetime (7 years for 1st gen Nest Protect, 10 years for 2nd gen), so Pathlight should work for as long as your Nest Protect does. To change settings: - Tap the Settings Nest settings icon on the Nest app home screen. - Scroll down and select the Nest Protect that you want to change settings for. - If you want to change Pathlight brightness, select Brightness. Then choose Low, Medium, or High. If you want to switch Pathlight on or off, Select Nest Sense, then select Pathlight. You can then set Pathlight to On or Off. If you have a wired Nest Protect, you can also choose Always On. Important: The brightness and on/off settings you choose will also affect the Nightly Promise light. However, even if the light is set to off, your Nest Protect will continue to test itself and the Nest app will let you know if everything is OK or if there's a problem. - Changes to Nest Protect’s Pathlight settings will take effect within a day for a battery-powered Nest Protect and within an hour for a wired Nest Protect. A clock icon in the app indicates the pending change. - To update Pathlight settings immediately, press the button on your Nest Protect once. We’re always here to help improve your experience and you’ll find us available through our support channels here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Ok product

I have had no issues with the product look and build find it a little over priced. I have issues with it is having to connect to the nest app. But can’t connect to the google home app. So my smoke alarm went off. I Said hey google turn off smoke alarm. Google informs me I can’t do that from the app. (This being my nest hub max I’m talking to) so I had to go retrieve a latter to climb up and turn it off. Still cannot figure out how to turn off with voice. So it’s essentially a over priced smoke alarm currently. With not so great night night.

Hi Salee, thanks for posting a review. We’re sorry to hear that Nest Protect didn’t meet your expectations. Nest Protect can be silenced through the Nest App and by pressing the device button. Here’s how you can silence your Nest Protect using the app: - Tap or swipe the alert to view its details. - If it’s safe, walk over to Nest Protect. You'll only be able to use App Silence when you're within a few feet of the Nest Protect that originally sounded the alarm. Make sure you've checked conditions in the room before silencing. - Tap the yellow Silence button. If you’re out of range or if the smoke level is too high, the button will be red, indicating the alarm can’t be silenced with the Nest app. - Tap and hold the large button. We understand that it would be easier if all your Google devices would be in one app. Our engineers and developers are always working with the integration to meet our customer’s expectations. In the meantime, we hope you will keep enjoying your Nest Protects since they provide you with one of the most reliable smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors in the market. If you need assistance, you can always reach out to us using this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

While relatively expensive, the additional functionality is worth it ifone is a techie and wants the additional features: daily monitoring, smart phone testing and review and motion light sensing. Easyinstallation as long as you can find the right circuit breaker. Would benice if they were integrated with nest max.

Equipment works great but app needs a lot of work

LTMiniard - 3 years ago

Everything is working great with the devices but the app needs some work done to make it a great app. You can not connect the Nest detectors to Google Home and there is no way to set up the app to send a text or phone message if one of the detectors alarms. This would be a GREAT feature to notify you of an event if you are not at home. How hard would that be??? My home security alarm system has the capability to do that!!!
